Patching is tough with a toddler. The easiest way is to use special stick on patches that are very difficult for him to remove.

The patching didn't work before because of the eye turn. Now that the eye turn is fixed, you must patch. If you do not patch, he will not get good vision. This is the most important thing you can do for your son at his age --- restore his sight.

The doctor is trying to strengthen his lazy eye which, even after surgery, has to be done by covering the good eye. It is hard to do with a toddler but it is well worth the hard work. If you feel it is not worth it you may want to get a second opinion....but usually doctors have a good reason for doing certain things. Working in the optical field, I saw numerous successes with eye patching whether done before or after surgery.

Patching the eye works. If he won't wear the patch, there are other methods (getting glasses lenses that blur vision in the good eye and eye drops that you put in the good eye to blur the vision). You can discuss them with the doctor.

My lazy eye didn't get caught until I was almost 7 (I got it because my left eye was less hyperopic than my right eye, so my right eye went lazy; I never had strabismus or eye surgery). My doctor used the glasses method with me. It was expensive, but at least my peers didn't pick on me in class for having to wear a patch.
