there is only one Archangel, he is the first son of the sons that God has in heaven.

the bible call to angels "sons" in Job 1:6 and 2:1 and 38:4-7 also Genesis 6:1

Daniel 12:1 "“And during that time Micha·el will stand up, the great prince who is standing in behalf of the sons of your people. And there will certainly occur a time of distress such as has not been made to occur since there came to be a nation until that time. And during that time your people will escape, every one who is found written down in the book"

a time of distress and people that are dead will resurrect in the future, sound familiar to you?

They 1) Matt 2:13 told Joseph to take baby Jesus and Mary to Egypt to escape Herod 2) Matt 4:11 ...angels came and ministered to Jesus after devil tempted Him in the desert 3)Matt 16:27 Jesus shall come in the glory of God with His angels...4)Matt 24:31 Shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet Matt 25:31 When Jesus comes (again) and all the holy angels with Him...
These are just a few in Matthew. And in Psalm 91:11 it says, "He will give His angels charge of you, to guard you in all your ways."
One excellent book on the subject, "Angels" by Billy Graham is worth reading if you are interested in who and what angels have meant to the world and do mean for our present world. Crossings.com and Amazon.com along with christian book stores all carry a variety of books on the subject. Enjoy the adventure as you learn!

"angel" ("angelos"- Greek form) means "messenger.

- angels are worshippers of God & ministers for the needs of humanity. (heb. 1:14)

- they are spirits & are immaterial & incorporeal (heb. 1:17).

- they are invisible but have the power to manifest themselves in human form in order to be seen by people.

- they are NOT the spirits of the departed, nor are they glorified human beings.

- they are not eternal ... they had a definite beginning. they were created by a command of God.(col.1:16); however, they are immortal (they do not die).

- they are non-human spirit beings w/ individual personalities.

- they were created as superior to humanity, in the Bible they never permitted people to worthip them. (heb. 1:7-8 & rev. 22:8-9)

-they have free will.

- they have various ranks & position:

- cherubim - they cover, guard, protect. they are of the highest rank. Lucifer was originally poointed to be the "anointed cherub that covereth"(ez:28:14) they also guard & defend God's holiness.

- seraphim (plural for seraph). theypurified the lips of hte prophet Isaiah & unceasingly worship God.

- archangels - (meaning the "chief angel"). Michael is such. he will lead the angelic war in heaven against Satan.

Gabriel (meaning "God is mighty") is the messenger of mercy & promise.

- angels are around christians when they are asleep & when they are awake. (psm 91:11-12)

christians do not have the authoriey to command or control angels - only God does. we should not pray to or worship angels; but we are to pray to God & have faith that He will dispatch angels to minister to christians as He wills.

when the enemy attacks w/ the purpose of destroying, an angel can inervene & rescue the child of God from serious harm.

there are also fallen angels (demons).
1/3 of the angels fell w/ lucifer. pride caused his downfall. lucifer's self-will & rebellion took over in his heart (isa.14:12-14). those fallen angels who are under his authority are those Paul named as "principalities, powers, rulers of the darkness of this world, & spiritual wickedness in high places" (eph.6:12).

they are powerful, but not more powerful than the Spirit of God. demons (fallen angels):
- accuse the saints (rev.12:10)
- devour those whom he is able to seize (1 pet.5:8)
- deceive people (2 cor.4:4)
- sow tares (mat.13:25,39) - they sow the seeds of wrong doctrine & delusion. they lead many astray & into aspostasy.
(1 tim. 4:12)

however, james 4:7 says, "submit yourselvs therefore to God. Resis the devil, & he will flee from you."

Lotsa stuff. The only problem is that they don't have much of a sense of humor. Kind of stolid and stuffy being duty oriented and all.
