What did the women do to compete and how did they decide who won each day?

I can remember watching it and seeing the lady receive the drape, crown, etc---but could not remember the rest of the show.

Well I'm older than dirt & remember watching this show with my grandmother. It was really cheesy (and probably was the prototype for hard luck shows today like "Extreme Home Makeover") The host would have three women on & each would tearfully tell her hard luck story. They usually involved spoused who were unemployed, a child or spouse with a near fatal disease with no money for medical attention & around the holidays they never could afford Christmas presents. After all the hard-luck stories were told, the audience would vote via applause th3with the levels "recorded" by one of those old applause meters. The winner would then be "crowned" and draped with a noth-eaten cloak with a fake ermine collar.

The prizes were pretty modest for today's standards - new refrigerators full of food, Christmas toys for the kiddies, etc. And the final treat was the winner was driven in a limo to the Beverly Hills Hotel for an overnight stay.

I'd love for an cable channel like TVland to show the old kinescopes of this show. You'd die laughing.

I used to see re-runs of that show. The woman with the worst sob story won. (the more family members in the hospital, the better) The prizes were washing machines and vacuums.

OMG....that is so old!!
Women would go on there and tell the saddest story about their lives and the audience would applaud and whoever got the loudest applause would win. Their prizes depended on what they needed, usually they were appliances and stuff like that.
