Depends on what state you are in. Some states, no. Some states give you a "rejection" sticker, with 3-5 days (varies by state) to get the problem fixed and the car reinspected.

I'm sure that it matters just what state your in. For instance, I heard -(from a smart dude)- that Louisianna kept cars that failed at the garage unless you fixed it or you had to have it towed home. I think Cal. is pretty strict on emmission laws for sure too. I was an inspector for years here in Oklahoma and you could always drive away but had to pay the inspection fee at that time anyway but no repairs were required. they dropped the inspection law here now.

You usually have 30 days. They will scrape off your old inspection sticker and replace it with a "failed" one, and they would tell you when you have to return for reinspection.

The DMV will give you a temporary pass and they're usually a month pass to get it up to standards.

you can drive it until you need to get a new license tab. then you need to show them the car passed before they will give you one.
