A shotgun is a much better residing house protection weapon, the unmistakable sound of a shotgun racking a shell into the chamber will make anybody yet a phycopath leap out the comparable window he got here in. besides the undeniable fact that something over 18" is unweilding, a pistol grip or a folding inventory is a stable addition, mine additionally has an exceedingly very wonderful small flashlight fixed on the barrel with a tension change only in front of the set off to apply on the final 2nd to blind the intruder (and to confirm he's an interloper) A pistol takes a sprint getting used to, and would not have the authority or understand a 12 guage receives. only my opinion, yet I even have the two, and that i continuously grab the shotgun first.

glock is good for that price range. get standard model with 9 mm. not the short barrel at least a 5 inch barrel. get warranty. had a 45 that jammed and took it back. had every model. my favorite hand gun is either a snubnose 38 for real close self protection and foolproof reliability or a 1911 colt gold cup or a springfield armory competition model with the tricked out trigger etc. that runs more like $1200 plus. get a used one for 700 to 800 in great shape at a big pawn shop. or some gun stores. it matters a lot your arm strength and gender and other personal things. if you are a hysterical kind of person you should not even have a d. gun.

No ammo specs must mean you want to shoot for cheap?, you could plink with a 22. or you could move up to 9mm. which is great for range work. They also make some very good self defense rounds and the recoil is very manageable. Guns I would look at are Taurus, Ruger, or Springfield Armory XDs. Cheaper is not always better but these companies are great.
Hope that helps...

I have 3 Glocks. 2 shoot the 10mm Auto and one shoots the .40 S.&W.. They all cost around $500, and my favorite is the model 20, which shoots the 10mm. It is an awesome round with more than enough power to do what you need, and if you start reloading you can make it even better while staying within safe limits.
Glocks are the most dependable pistols ever designed and that is one reason most police use them. People who slander Glocks are either ignorant or telling lies to try to justify their old prejudices.

i personally have a bersa thunder 380($240 total including hard case, holster and tax) but if i had any thing else it would be a taurus mt-85( .38 special) they can be had for about $300 plus $30 for a good holster most people want semi auto guns because they are "cool" or as a status symbol.however a revolver really is a better alternative because of several reasons
1-less liability(in most situitions when people fire shots they forget how many shots they have fired) if most states are like virginia you will have to account for each shot.
more shots= more liability
2-the gun is easy to identify as being loaded or empty
3-the ammo is realitively cheap and highly potent
4-guns are less prone to getting caught on clothing(provided you buy the right gun) when carrying it concealed
5-ease of use
6-very few malfunctions including when dirty(in fact i haven't ever seen one malfunction or break)
also they can be had very cheap( there is not much demand for them these days) you can get a brand new charter arms detective for under $200

If you are going cheap hipoint makes 9mm, 40s&w, and 45acp for around $200.
I own the 40s&w and put over 1,000 thru it with no feeding or jam issues.
I had a glock and sold it due to jamming and for those of you out there i did keep it clean, I could of just had a bad glock but if i needed to pull it and use it i wanted some thing that would go bang
hipoint has a lifetime warrenty
for $200 it is well worth it

I know you said $500 range but personally I think Heckler & Koch USP45 is the best you can get. Used you can find one for around 800. But you get what u pay for. For a cheap gun either a Glock 9MM or Beretta. The Glocks are very popular so used guns under $500 are easy to find. I say the Beretta because that was my SOP weapon while in Aganistan for the Marines. The Beretta 92 fs is almost identical to the M9 I carried while flying Predators. It might be closer to $600 used but I can atest to it's durability.

double action revolver in 357mag just point and pull the trigger it goes bang in the moment of truth no safetys or clips or slides to fumble with, you can practice with 38 specials less recoil the 357 mags and cheaper, can carry loaded with 357mags or 38 special+P+ a more powerful load than standard 38 specials but not quite as bad as 357 mags
try ruger, and taurus firearms, ruger sp101 snubnose is what i carry(note that a 38 special will not chamber 357 mags/ but a 357mag will chamber 38 specials)as always practice practice practice
