Yes it is very common to give Benadryl to dogs to help with the itching. It helps some dogs and not others. Ask your vet for the dosage.
Also Genetmicin spray is vey effective but it contains steroids even tho it is topical so you need a prescrip so your vet can make sure it is OK for your pup.

My dog has skin and ear allergies - Vet also reccomended benedryl- She weighs about 20lbs as well . We give her 1 tablet in the morning and if she starts itching again a second tablet at bedtime so she can sleep through the night.

The vet told you to use Benadryl and didn't give you a dosage amount? Why do I doubt that?
The usual dosage vets prescribe is milligram per pound. If your puppy has any type of a rash he needs to actually see the vet for a skin scraping to check for mange. Puppies more commonly have mange than allergies. Demodectic mange, the most common kind in puppies, is usually treated by vets with moderate to large doses of ivermectin along with a topical pyrythrin product.

Its very common. Pets get the same things we humans do and are prescibed about the same thing too. My dog was allergic to the food he was eating and he was prescibed Prednisone which is a steroid and an anti itch shampoo. You might also want to try Aveeno Bath that you can get at any supermarket or drugstore, along with the Benydryl

Find the dosage from your vet.
As for the scratching, if it is an allergy, it is probably something he ate. Don't let him have any "people" food for awhile and see if the itching goes away.

benadryl is for allergies.. sometimes the dog's diet can cause itching, sometimes dry skin.
give him or her a good bath, and clean and rinse the skin well....see if that helps.
my dog had ear problems for the first few years of her life from allergies.. she's since stopped it.
i hope you find some good answers... you can also do a search on Yahoo... maybe try REMEDY FOR DOGS WITH ITCHY SKIN or DOGS SKIN ALLERGIES.
hope you get some good help here as well.

zYes it is a commonly prescribed drug by vets. You give the dosage your vet tells you to give, not the dosage someone from the net tells you to give.
If you didn't hear the dose the vet told you or if they forgot ot tell you call them back and ask.
