90% of the motorists out there NEVER check their engine oil level! Why why why? An engine rebuild costs thousands of dollars/pounds/euros/pesos/yen! How could anyone not take the extra 3 minutes to check the oil level each week? Especially since most people who own cars spend most of their money on their car aside from their home. WHY NOT TAKE CARE OF IT?

It does not matter if you change your oil every 3,000 miles you still need to check the oil level. The germans check it at every stop at the gas station. There is a small chance that the oil can start leaking out of the engine block through a hole somewhere. Most likely on the spin on oil filter made of thin metal. OR the oil could start being burned by the engine itself. If the oil level gets too low before 3,000 miles then you will need a whole new engine.

Wow you are really emotional about this. I do agree with you and I think the car should be taken care of very carefully if you expect to keep it for a long time, or even if you do not expect to have it for a long time.

For me, it's forgetfulness. I intent to take the car (2006 Subaru) in for an oil change, etc., but can't ever seem to get the time to do it. My son checked the oil last week and ran right out and got a quart & put it in - thank goodness! Hre always put in his two cents worth of not letting this happen again. Before I was divorced my x used to always check those things. That's my other excuse. You are 100% right - take care of the car! You get a star for an important subject & reminder!

Everybody who has a car knows that the oil should be changed every 3000 miles. So why would you want to check the oil level every week?
The Germans might have to check their oil level more often, because the cars are rusting due to the weather they have (snow, streets covererd with special salt to melt the snow). Been there.

Why bother? Just have an oil change every 3 months or 3,000 miles and keep an eye on that needle or whatever you call it of that meter on the dash board to make sure it doesn't go up too high.

may be those who don't check are lazy and just can not be bothered and to be honest people are so much in a hurry to get somewhere that they forget to do a routine check and then remember -"oh i didn't check the oil or didn't put any water in" when their car engines heat up and they have a breakdown in the middle of the motorway.
having said all that my husband normally checks these things every other week so its job done for me but if he wasn't around then i would take the responsibility..

I check it every couple of weeks just to keep on top of it and change the oil every 5000 miles.(myth about 3000 miles.) My cars run great.

EDIT: good for the Germans

You're supposed to check your engine's oil level?

I pat myself on the back when I get the oil changed on time, I didn't know I was supposed to check it too...what exactly am I looking for?

How do you know 90 per cent of motorists don't do this? Don't you mean SOME motorists don't do it?

Everyone I know who drives routinely checks their vehicle's oil and water levels, except for a couple of people who have sealed unit motors.

Cheers :-)

Many people were never taught to check it -- their parents don't teach them any car care at all -- often times because they don't know it.

And few, if any, read the manuals associated with their vehicles to find out the proper scheduled maintenance.

I agree. What bothers me MOST though is when people don't use turn signals, or when they throw cigarette butts outside the window. I just want to pick them up at a stop light and throw them back in their cars.
