... has me leaning more towards the Marines, or if that fails, the Army. My question is whether or not either of these branches have good technical jobs that I can use in the future. My interests lie in military intelligence, namely intercepting and decoding enemy communications.

Are positions of this nature available in the Marines or Army? Also, about the new Army sign-up bonus they've been mentioning... when is that paid? After basic or after individualized training?

Kingpin, no one asked for your political observations. You say that you're appaled by young people who decide to join join the military in 2007, and that they're idiots. Is it that, or is it that you're appaled by anyone who actually decides to put someone else before himself? Who let you out of your mother's basement, anyway?

All branch's have interpreters and intelligence operators.

Bonus's are paid after you have completed school. generally half the bonus is paid a couple of months after you finish school and the rest is paid annually during the rest of your enlistment.

But until you take the DLAT test at MEPS and make an appropriate score, Don't get your hopes up about being an interpreter.

As far as technology your best branch is the Air Force. The Marines have the toughest basic training, followed by the Army then the Air-Force. The Marine Corps. is actually a division of the Navy, so either way you go there your going to get the same challenge of tough training.

The bonus will be paid out in allotments over your contract period.

Technical jobs are available in the Marines and Army but have older outdated technology.

Military Intelligence is a great field to get into. The Army has many jobs regarding communications and intelligence. I personally would choose army over the marines. Right now, the army has a LARGE enlistment bonus for interrogators.

Usually, the bonuses are paid after completion of Basic Training and Individualised Training. You can get it all at once or in four equal payments, depending on what is stated in your contract when you enlist.

Good Luck!!!

If you're interested in getting technical training that will help you in the future, the Navy is the best way to go. The Air Force's technical training is pretty good, and so is the Marine Corps'. The Navy's advanced electronics field training is the most sought after by employers in the oil & gas industry, government contractors, and the semiconductor industry.

The Marines will provide you w/ a technical job alright. You'll ge tto fire an M-16A2 and live in a shipping container. Check out some pix of Marines in Iraq.
This is the Corps version of 21st Century Combat?
WTF They had better accomodations living in trenches in WW1. But keep in mind, the corporate Bottom line must be held for Halliburton& Bechtel so they cut corners wherever& when ever.
Any one that would join the Military in 2007 is either a Moron or a Doggone FOOL.

I would stick with the USAF, but I'm partial to that branch as I was in it. I was in the communications squadron so I know that most of the communications done in any war area is set up by the USAF. If you want to be sure, go talk to a recruiter in each of the branches and see what your options are before making the leap. And get everything in writing!!! If a recruiter promises you something and you don't get it on paper, it's not worth anything to you and they can renig (I learned this the hard way).
