Why isn't foot and mouth disease not called hoof and mouth disease?

Technically, cows, sheep and other animals like that don't have feet

I just think it's a bit stupid

No, it's not stupid - there's a reason.

Foot and mouth disease only affects animals with cloven hooves. A horse can't get it so to call it hoof and mouth would be incorrect.

Actully, we do call it "hoof and mouth" here in the US.
