If your car was a little dirty, would the price of the car go down just because of that when selling it to carmax?

When a car is appraised by a professional, such as a buyer at Carmax or another used car dealer, a "little dirt" will not effect the value. If the car is full of trash, or the interior is stained and seriously filthy, the cost of cleaning cause the value to be adjusted to reflect the condition.

When I look at a vehicle, I always assume that I am going to have to pay to have it detailed, even if the car has just been washed. I do not add or deduct for that!

Mechanical condition and damage will effect the value of a vehicle, a little dirt will not!

In my experience, KBB ALWAYS over-estimates the price of the car. I have priced more than 50 cars on KBB and not even once the KBB price was at or above the price that the car was eventually sold. Carmax will give you a price that is usually slightly above what you can get from selling the car to a normal dealer and below what you can sell to a private party. Compared to KBB, the Carmax price should be slightly lower than the KBB trade-in value. The good thing about Carmax is that the estimate is free! You just go there and show them the car and they make you an offer that is valid for 2-4 weeks. Even better would be to try to find a private party buyer. That's the most money you can get for a car. Try Craigslist or ebay.

Well, there are technically two answers to this....

They will tell you that they can look past any dirt and grime when the appraise your vehicle, and that's the technical answer.

However, if it looks clean and ready to put on their lot to sell, they'll want it more and you'll be in a better position to haggle for the price you want them to pay you for it. The first number they give you will probably be the same, but they'll be more inclined to give you more if they can see the car as a clean, retail piece.

That being said, if it's a 200,000 mile p.o.s., it won't make any difference. Wholesale is wholesale.

first you have to know if car max will take your car. if you have a late model within the last seven years yeah maybe they will take it but don't expect them to take a car that is 10 years old
