Yes, be prepared for lots of drool. Be prepared for drool when the weather is warm, after your dog eats, after your dog drinks, after exercising, when the dog can smell that tasty dinner you're preparing, etc. Be prepared for drool on your clothes and your walls - it's not uncommon for Bernard drool to get as far up as the ceiling. While drool isn't hard to clean up (the worst is dried drool but soap and water will take care of that), there's definately a gross-out factor involved for some people. Saint Bernards can be smooth (short-haired) or rough (long-haired) but because of their size they've got lots of hair either way. Rough coated Saint Bernards are going to require more grooming.
Saint Bernards are huge dogs who require a lot of care. Anyone who's grossed out by drool shouldn't even consider getting a St. Bernard.
Please consider adopting a dog from a rescue group or humane society instead of buying from a breeder. Saint Bernards are not rare dogs and I'm sure you can find plenty of dogs in your area who need loving homes. Check out www.petfinder.com to find Saint Bernards in your area.

Saint Bernards drool as a mean of sweating. Some people have the drool glands taken out but this is not recomended.

Honey, I have four. They have re-carpeted my house weekly for many years now. A vacuum lasts about six months. I have had drool hanging from my walls, ceiling fans and once even plopped in my iced tea. You have to constantly clean when you have a Saint in the house. When it comes to drool the hotter it is the more you get. It does clean up easily if you get it right away. However, if you allow it to dry you will need to scrape it off. Their personality more than makes up for the mess. They are my favorite dogs. Very High Maintenance.
Oh and don't let anyone give you that BS of "dry mouthed Saints" It isn't true!!!!!

I grew up with 2 Saint Bernards & they do shed quite a bit like a golden. They do drool a lot & when they drink most of it falls out of thier mouth as they are walking away.Yes they are messy but drool doesn't bother me, I have an American Bulldog now & she drools a lot to.I wouldn't trade her for all the $ in the world.

I do not have or like Saints, but I have had Newfies for 16 years, and I know drool. The drool CAN be hard to clean up. It can stick to EVERYTHING. They shake their heads and the drool goes on the ceiling and walls. It can have hair in it. They see food, and it gets worse. They are hot and it gets worse.
Some drool worse than others. You cannot tell who is going to be a champion drooler when they are puppies. Generally, females drool less because they do not have as deep a muzzle and have smaller flews.
And yes, they shed. Both the long and short coated Saints shed.

until eventually that surgical treatment isn't immediately advantageous for the dogs, it is inhumane and egocentric to get it carried out. it is like getting a cat declawed. in case you won't be able to stay with a Saint Bernard as nature meant, then you certainly could seem for a distinctive breed of dogs. I could point out that i do no longer count quantity neuter/spay surgical procedures against nature, through fact those approaches are jointly advantageous to human beings and animals. Declawing, debarking, tail docking, ear cropping and....salivary gland surgical treatment (?) are definitely no longer advantageous to the animal and are entirely for human excitement. Any non-obligatory surgical treatment that painfully and unnaturally modifies an animal's physique for no different reason than it makes the animal much less complicated to stay with or extra effective finding is inhumane.

They drool everywhere, don't get this dog if you're not prepared to deal with it. And, yes long haired Bernards shed very badly, but it can be controlled with regular brushing.

Drooling and shedding comes with the breed. I bred them for a while, but it's so hot for them in the south. The pups are so adorable. Ours weighed 28 pounds at 5 weeks old and looked like Teddy bears. They are not fussy about where they drool, but if you really want one, go for it!
