In the new testament he was chosen to replace Judas but then Paul comes along and we never hear of him again ?.
Are there any traditions/stories i don't know about ?

It's an interesting question.There were thousands who followed him and we know nothing of their names. I don't think the disciples were into the cultural habit of giving posterity to themselves by saying too much about themselves.
Followers graded as apostles is a man centred levitation of the word 'Sent' or 'Messenger'. Christ called them messengers, like he called the 70 'messengers' and anyone else in the time frame of Earth they are all 'messengers' sent by Christ.
The reason perhaps therefore that Matthias is not heard of again is because the disciples didn't make a big thing about recognition (just as Jesus had taught them) but preferred anonymity .
The Roman Church made a big thing out of the Apostolic Office, like a lot of 'things' they majored on, to put man on a pedastal above another man and more profanely, to put Christian men on thrones.

I have heard speculation, but I don't know fact. Either he didn't do much, or contact was lost with him. Whatever it was, God (the writer of the New Testament, by inspiration) didn't consider it important enough to put it in there.

they cast lots to choose Matthias, which suggests that it wasn't God leading them to choose the 12th apostle. This is supported also by the fact that we never hear from him again. the church often does stuff outside of God's will. We make mistakes but God is good to restore us.
