Sugar and carbohydrates aren't healthy for dogs anymore than they are for humans. In fact, dogs generally were built to eat a more protein rich diet, so carbs are probably worse for dogs than humans.

However, as a one time treat, a twinkie shouldn't do any harm. Good job for asking your vet. Remember, your vet's the biggest authority.

Here are the things you should never give your dog, because they work different in dogs than they do in people:
chocolate
onions
grapes (including raisins)
macadamian nuts

If you'd like a healthier treat, you have several options. You could get a dog cookbook at the library and make biscuits or cookies or something. There are also several recipes online. A quick search yielded a page with several results: http://www.party-photo-favors.com/dog_birthday_cake_recipes.htm

You could give her meat. Many dogs would prefer meat to sugar anyway. Or you could go to a specialty dog bake shop (like the Three Dog Bakery) and get her a cake or other treat (these do tend to be expensive).

Twinkie Birthday Cake

I don't think feeding a dog any sort of sweet dessert like twinkies/cake/etc is good idea. We might like it, but dogs don't have the same tastes as we do, and its not good for them at all. Try making a small patty type creation out of ground beef or chicken and giving that to him instead. He will like it much more, and its definitely better for him.

If there is a specialty pet store in your town/city go there and purchase a dog cake. Most places that carry Three Dog Bakery treats have them... Or you can buy one of their cookbooks and makeone yourself. I wouldn't feed a twinky to a child let alone my dog witha more sensative stomach.

I fed my dogs birthday cake, They have recipe books for doggie pup cakes. They are healthy and easy to make. Look it up. If you still want the twinkie it should be fine.

Feed your puppy something appropriate, not a twinkie! That will give him a terrible tummyache and diarrhea!

As a regular diet a twinkie is not good food for a dog.

For her birthday why not. My dog is an Akita and she has been eating junk food as long as we have.

She eats chocolate, she loves grapes and gets gum drops as a treat. She is over ten years old pretty good for an Akita and except for hip problem she has rarely had to go to the vet. The vet says she is very healthy.

Ace the hardware store dog loves chocolate and has gotten into boxes that they sell and eaten the whole box many times. The dog is a boxer and is about twelve years old.

What a cute idea!!

Since a Boston Terrier is so small, go with the vet's idea, but start with a whole Twinkie, with a candle in it. Everyone blow it out, =-) and everyone gets a little tiny piece! She gets the last piece, a very small piece, and then follow it up with her favoritest healthy treat in the whole wide world, =-)

And take lots of pictures!

Later!

No! Don't give human food to your dog, especially processed sugars! Honestly, if you were thinking of giving a twinkie to a puppy, you should be ashamed of yourself....no matter WHAT age you are!

You can look online for recipes to make a dog cake. And then maybe just use real icing. Good luck!
