I saw answers to another post in which several people said, you should not drink....

What verses would you give to support this idea?

Doesn't the Bible just say, do not drink in excess? Didn't Jesus and his disciples drink at the last supper...Didn't Jesus turn water into wine?

I know in the Southern Baptist church they tell you the wine of Jesus' day was not fermented like today....I say that's a cop out...

What do you think?

Saying that the wine of Jesus' day was not fermented like today is a cop out, I agree. Jesus made water into wine. It doesn't matter if it was LITE wine!

I do not believe drinking alcohol is a sin. The sin is drinking too much and getting drunk.

okay...Jesus' First Miracle was turning Water into Wine at a wedding...he liked to party as much as the rest of the people around that time...but the thing to be remembered is that NO where in the bible does it mention him stumbling, or puking, or being a drunk. He understood that in moderation it is okay...it is when we let it take control of our lives that it is wrong. When it turns our eyes away from God that Drinking (really anything) becomes and issue.

Alcoholism runs in my family and to the people that have problems with it, I just leave it alone. I also work with Jr. Highers and we encourage not to touch alcohol at all! So for me to tell them "DONT DRINK" then for them to see me coming out of a bar, that's hypocritical!
Also, the Bible says "don't be drunk with wine" what is the defination of drunk? The legal limit? That is different in different states! So is drunk 1 drink . . . 2 drinks? Honestly, I'd rather leave it alone totally than get to heaven and find out that 1 was too many!

It's not a sin to drink alcohol. Everyone in the world would go to hell if it was.
It's all about the ABUSE of alcohol as with any drug.
Anything can be abused .... work, internet, eating.

southern Baptist generaly don't live in the real world - they live in the ficticious fundmentalist world.

Drinking alcohol is not a sin.

No, I do not think it is a sin, but then I do not use the term "sin" at all. However, even when I was a Christian, I did not consider MODERATE drinking to be a sin. Getting drunk might be considered such: it is at least unwise, as it creates a diminished capacity to make judgments. One might do something which, upon sobering up, one would regret quite seriously.

I don't believe drinking alcohol is a sin. I believe it often makes people behave as if they had no sense at all, of course, but I don't believe it's a sin.

There is evidence to suggest that the first use of alcohol was medicinal, as a means to lessen the pain of toothache in neolithic times.

NO way! Jesus drank wine. I don't like the stuff at all, but I see nothing wrong with moderate drinking.

Clearly not all Protestants believe that drinking is a sin. I have relatives who are "Protestant" and they all drink beer, wine and even mixed drinks, but not to get outright drunk.

Drinking is fine, unless in excess. It is even recommended in several places in the bible.
