Everyone hates their jobs. But man you got it rough Id quit there are better jobs then that. If your not getting paid for your extra hours your boss is pretty much stealing from you.

QUIT.

I would get another job. Don't worry about references from her. When you leave a job, legally, she can only say the dates you were employed and your title. This does not mean she might not say other things, but if she does, then she is in violation of labor laws and can be sued. Obviously a suit would be a waste of time.

Since you are young, references are not as important as they are after you have established a career.

Having some peace of mind in school is more important than the work experience. You will have plenty of time for those lovely experiences later. As a student, you should hopefully be able to find something else fairly easily.

Good luck.

For one thing, you can't let her bully you into not quiting.Don't let anyone have that kind of power over you. Just because she gives you a bad reference doesn't mean you won't get another job. An employer who wouldn't even listen to your side of the story isn't someone you'd want to work for anyways is it? Besides, do you have other jobs and former employers that would give you a good reference? It doesn't sound like it's worth it to stick around. Don't let them abuse you and frighten you into staying. People will know what you're like from the interviews you get. They won't neccessarily not hire you because of one bad reference. If you absolutely HAVE to stay then let them know you won't be used. Refuse to work without getting paid. They can't make you do anything. You should try and find another job first though before you quit. Going without money may prove to be harder than sticking around your old job for a while.

There are so many jobs out there. Some might not be your idea of ideal, but in the long-run, especially when you're in college, it looks good that you worked while studying. It doesn't have to be related to your future career. When you graduate, employers know you want to get your feet wet with experience. A degree and some job experience already shows you're smart and a hard worker. Try to find a new job and just take your current job off your resume so you don't have to worry about using them as your reference.

First, if you aren't getting paid for the hours you work, that is illegal. You are entitled to a 10-minute paid rest period for each four hours of work and a 30-minute unpaid meal period for each 5 hours (unless your shift ends in 6 hours.) visit www.dol.gov to learn about wage and hour laws, and to file a complaint. Many young employees get treated like crap because they don't know any better - there are laws designed to protect you.

Second, there are consequences for employers who give bad references if they aren't really warranted. Quitting a job does not warrant a bad reference. if she tries to give you one, send a "cease and desist" letter indicating that you will pursue legal action against her for slander. That should shut her up. You are not required to give any notice, although 2 weeks' is customary. Write her a letter and let her know you're leaving to pursue other career goals (or whatever you want to say.) Make sure to keep a copy for yourself.

File for unemployment while youa re looking for work - if she contests your claim, providing the UI with the info that you weren't being paid for hours worked should make for a very interesting unemployment hearing....

Get out of there ASAP and find a new job. Good luck, ok?

Many successful people are always job shopping when they already have a job .
Start job shopping and going to interviews . (they don't seek references from your current active employer other than to verify employment with HR)
Quit the cranky one when you get offered a better one .
And working unpaid hours is illegal in most states . . .
Are you Not in the USA ?
If you are , contact the state labor board once you resign (after getting another job) and keep the work diary like a previous person said )

Go job hunting now & good luck !

You must be paid for all hours you work. In addition, every state has break and meal period laws that employers are responsible for following and enforcing among their employee population. Talk to the HR person at your work about not being paid and not getting breaks. If there is no HR person tell your boss that you need to be paid for ALL of the work you do and you need to be given breaks per the law. If they do not comply contact your state's labor board and turn in a wage claim (keep very detailed records of work performed and pay received). If you don't know the laws in your state then tell me which one it is and I will look them up for you.

Ok what he is doing is illegal! If you work a full day your allowed an hours break! And not getting piad for extra hours? Is he having a laugh? Dont complain to him or say anything...keep a diary of every day you work and what bad stuff happens...you need to go higher. I dont know what sort of job it is but go to his manager...head office or whoever owns the company. If this doesnt work just quit and take them to court!

Apply to another job and don't tell the boss and don't give them your current job's number. Wait until if you get the job and if you do, then quit the one you hate. That's what I did.......wait you work only on saturdays and sundays. you need to find a real job anyway.

There's no point in a job if you don't like it. But like you said stick it out until you find another job which you need to do fast!! You can't quit then have nothing.
