If I was going to have a kid, I'd check the list of the top baby names of the past year and NOT use them. I've noticed everyone naming their kids Grace, Lilly, etc....there is going to be classrooms full of kids with the same name..like about 5 years ago when there was 10 Hunters...or when i was kid with Jennifers...but on the other hand, there is some bizzare names people are using now.

Ok, the first two answers...don't you wonder if the rest of your lives people are going to say...Your name is Marissa..and she'll have to be like no..or the other one..it looks like Mila (sounds like vanilla, except, just with a M..)

While I appreciate the efforts of some parents to create unique and special names for their children.
I always think back to the first day of school, the teacher is trying to take roll call. They have to try and pronounce these names-that is what is going to happen to their children for the rest of their lives.
Correcting spelling and pronunciation of their names for a lifetime seems sometimes more bothersome than special and unique.
My kids have somewhat common names - on the popularity scale, kind of about halfway down the top 100 list.

On the one hand, people tend to stick to the same names because they're timeless classics and are just too beautiful and meaningful to let go. And quite a few parents in this day and age still name children after family members, which is an old European tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. And because there weren't that many names to choose from in the olden days - or even just at the beginning of the 1900s since our countries and continents weren't closely bonded through trade, people end up giving their kids names that have been around for decades or even centuries, and there's really nothing wrong with that. However, I do think that a lot of these new-age, commonly repeated names such as Madison and Mackenzie have to do with trends and I think that's what you originally meant... Still, it is maddening to see the same names being repeated over and over and over again but, you shouldn't get irritated or upset about it. Instead, look on the bright side! After all, if all these people are catering to the same names, then those that don't will be able to possess the truly and legitimately unique names of society. Now, isn't that a nice thought? :3

Ugh, I would hate to have my kids deal with a bunch a kids with the same names in school because teachers would start naming them (ei) John H, John R.. and I think that's just ridiculous, so I do stay away from top lists.
I have a one and a half year old.. her name is Marianna. I looked into names, meanings and origins. I found Mariana, but thought that adding another n would look nice.. so I did. Turns out Marianna is a name too.. so that's good. I haven't heard of many Mariannas out there, mostly Shilo (with Brangelinas kid), and a bunch of other names the "stars" are using. I'd rather stay away from popular names myself. I'm pregnant with my second little girl and I am thinking of naming her Carina or Carinna..there goes the double n again *lol*... but we'll see.

When choosing a name for my kids I didn't look at any list of popularity, I just went with the names I loved. I had no idea that 4 years ago the name Joshua was so popular, I'd have never guessed it was like number 3 when I named my son.

I grew up in Catholic communities where every 4th child was named Michael, Mark, Mary or Ann. If you had Greeks around it was Nick (every other boy). If it were Mexicans, it was Jose, Miguel, Maria or Theresa. It wasn't a problem. SO RELAX!
Naming of children started changing around the 1910. New and unique names and modernized names are part of the American culture. I have more trouble with people seeking to have totally original names than those who don't mind using something that is popular. My biggest issue though is women giving girls boy names which is increasingly popular. I guess they don't want girls?

I try to steer clear of the most popular baby names but some people like what they like. I know that I knew about 5 Ambers when I was younger and they even had the same middle name as me. To each his own!

Oh, I know! If I see one more baby named Madison, I'm going to scream! And I also hate when they give their baby a weirdo "unique" name like a girl I know who named her baby (a boy!) Epic. My mom did a good job, I think- she named me Alana. Kind of out there, but not TOO gross, and at least I wasn't one of the 6 Jennifers in my class...
