While there will be some variances from faith to faith, I think it fair to say that in most protestant denominations the Elders would lead the congregation in matters both spiritual and the more pragmatic, the decision makers if you will. And that Deacons are more like helpers who tend to the more day-to-day tasks of a congregation. The Bible might seem to give the greater authority to the Elder, but that is not necessarily the same as "higher".

The deacon is to provide for the physical matters of the Church and the Elders are to serve or help provide for the spiritual matters of the Church. The Elders have the last word this side of the Bible.
Position is not a good term, we are all to work together for the Glory of God.

In the Presbyterian Church which has both elders and deacons. Elders take care of the spiritual things of the church, the deacons take care of the physical things of the church.

An elder and deacon are really about the same, except for one thing- an elder has to teach a deacon does not.
however, do not seek a high position, let God place you there.

An elder. A deacon is a servant. Women can also serve as deacons, but not as elders.

Actually we are all equal in God's eye. Just positions are established in a church to those who have been Christians longer and have more spiritual wisdom as well as have talent in certain types of ministry.
If you want position start by kneeling before the cross and allow Christ to establish you and your heart.

Different term for church leaders in different churches. These are similar positions but in different Churches. Some churches don't have either.
Sorry if this doesn't help, but would need to know what particular church you are referring to.
