In a religious concept, you must believe that your religion is the only and best way to live life and must therefore spread the word. You must also believe that you religion has made you into such a great person that you must share it with others so they can share the great vision that you do.

Vanity works the same for atheists. You feel so strongly that there can't possibly be a god and that you *must* be right about this that you must change the minds of the misguided religious people.

Is vanity an inate human characteristic?
Is vanity enhanced when combined with views on or about religion?

The great difference between Atheists and Protestants are rather straight forward. The Atheists don't try to force anyone into their specific beliefs via threats and condemnations.
The Protestants do try to force everyone into their specific beliefs via threats and condemnations.

If you want the Truth.....Ask a Pagan.

Fireball, I've differed with you on many occaisions, but this is the first time I've read an obvious lie in your statements.

I am a Christian, and my denomination does not ask us to proselytize. However, the people I know who do proselytize seem to be quite genuine in their concern for others. Their religion teaches them that people who don't accept Christ as their savior will burn in hell. They don't want these people to burn in hell, so they try to convert them. Also, there is a Biblical passage stating that believers should spread the word to every nation. They are not necessarily thinking of vanity or self-glorification, generally speaking. They truly believe that they are saving people from an eternity in hell, and also that they're fulfilling the Biblical directive to go into every nation spreading the word of God. I often disagree with their methods, but their sincerity is, in most cases, quite evident.

With some people it might, but I believe that many people who do it are genuinely concerend and think they are doing a good thing. It's sad, for they are turning more people off than they realize.

They are hurting the cause. It is best to let your light shine through the way you treat others. If someone is interested, he/she will ask.
