i think the answer should come from somebody who s a 100% greek....(ME) ouzo is made out of grapes!! just like wine! first they collect the type of grape they prefferf then they squeeze them untill the juice comes out they collect it and boil it with additional fruits(apple) or seeds (glykaniso) to give it the right taste.glykanisos is a seed that gives the liquorish taste to it and the percentage of glykaniso to grapes is as much as every producer thinks is enough to give his ouzo the right density and taste!! that mix is boiled and distilled more than once and takes days or months according to the amount you produce.....it s a tough procedure (especially for family distillers -like my family-) as it takes a lot of patience and overnight watch (to keep the temperature steady and the amount of steam in the "crater" where it boils.......the double or triple boil also contribute to the taste of ouzo....ouzo is considered one of the safest drinks (due to it s natural ingredients) but you have to also accompany it with little appetizers (greek appetizers that is) smthng that in greece is called meze (usually simple stuff like olives tomato feta cheese anchovies octopus...etc)and never mix it with other drinks or drink too much!!!perfect straight with some ice or cold water(yes!!!water !like vodka n cranberrie?here is ouzo and cold water) ENJOY!!!Happy to help...

Ouzo is a Greek anise-flavored liqueur that is widely consumed in Greece. It is similar to French pastis, or Italian Anice and Turkish rakı, but a little sweeter and smoother. It can be drunk either straight or, less often, mixed with water.
Ouzo starts by distilling 96 percent alcohol by volume (ABV) pure ethyl alcohol of agricultural origin (or 96 percent pure ethyl alcohol in which 0.05 percent natural anethole has been added), in copper stills together with anise and optionally other flavorings previously mentioned by others (star anise, coriander, cloves, cinnamon, etc.). The product is a flavored alcoholic solution known as flavored ethyl alcohol or, more commonly as ouzo yeast - μαγιά ούζου in Greek - (a misnomer really, as no fermentation has taken or will take place). Ouzo yeast is then usually mixed with 96 percent pure ethyl alcohol (the Greek law dictates that at least 20 percent of total final alcohol must originate from ouzo yeast) , and finally sugar may be added and the mix is diluted with water (final ABV must be at least 37.5 percent), usually around 40 percent ABV. Some producers such as Varvayiannis, Babatzim (ouzo classic) and Pitsiladis do not add any further ethyl alcohol, they simply dilute ouzo yeast with water (and add sugar if needed). This latter type of ouzo is considered the highest quality and -quite predictably- of the highest price as well.
It should be noted that ouzo production does not include any fermentation or multiple distillations whatsoever; this is the case for tsipouro, another well known Greek alcoholic drink which is actually more related to Italian grappa than ouzo.
Pernod is a liquor derived from absinthe, which is strengthened with star anisse and herbs. It is made by a french company, Pernod Ricard.

A strange but lovely drink with some narcotic attributes, it is made from the unripe fruits of the lesser utzzo plant, a secretive little shrub that can be found growing on old greek middens. Be careful about picking any of the fruit as there is usually an ancient greek hiding away close by equipped with a blunderbuss, your only chance here will be they are usually half blind from a lifetime of drinking ouzo. Run away as fast as you can - it takes about three minutes to reload and you should be out of sight by then, unless you are limping! Hope this helps................. The Lad.

ouzo is mainly drunk with fish in greece.
it is made from initially from grape skins it is mixed with herbs such asstar-anise,coriander,cloves,angelica root, cinnamon, lime blossom.
the mixture is put into a copper still and boiled .the liquid is then cooled and stored for months before it is diluted to about 80% proof or 40% alcohol.
home made is a lot stronger about 80% alcohol
