I know you have said you want a pump but... Shotgun recoil is excessive. You haven't said what your body size is or the body size of the woman this shotgun is going to be for, so I am going to recommend a lighter kicking shotgun. A semi auto shotgun will absorb much of the recoil of the round. You will need a good recoil pad from limbsaver and possibly something to cushion the top of the comb against the cheek. Also most women's collar bones are angled differently than men's and the normal cant to the stock does not fit well on a women's shoulder. You can find stocks that can be fitted to a shotgun that are adjustable for cant, drop, comb height and so on that will fit her better. If you want her to be truly happy shooting a shotgun consider these options.

Have her go to a skeet and trap range with you or go yourself if you are the woman it is for and ask to try out some guns. My wife tried an 870 12 gauge and end up sorely bruised. I warned her, she pulled it in tight and still after 50 rounds (God I love her!) was severly bruised.

Heavier guns will lessen recoil, get a good recoil pad, and consider a semi auto as it will reduce recoil.

20 gauge is a lighter round but in a light gun it can kick almost as badly as 12 gauge. You can get a 20 gauge but make sure the gun is not light.

As a Gunsmith,Gun Shop Owner and Shooting Coach, I would suggest the Remington 870 series Wingmaster Pump Shotguns. If you lack experience I would suggest a 20 gauge to start with, but most women I know and have taught in the past 20+ years seem to move up to the 12 gauge in little or no time. The real determining factor is what you are comfortable with from a recoil aspect and what you can shoot the most accurately , also considering what you want to use it for. Remington has an incredible reputation for fair prices, quality, workmanship and customer service. The 870 has a whole list of accessory barrels for almost any type shooting you can imagine from Skeet and Trap (Clay Pigeons) to Deer Hunting to Personal or Home defense.. Remington guns sell 4 to 1 over any other brand in my shop and it's been that way the entire 29+ years I've been in business. The also have great resale value should you decide to step up to a semi-automatic or over/under shotgun later. I just can't think of any gun on the market that can match on all the points I've mentioned here. Feel free to write if I can answer any more questions you may have.

The pump action 12 gauge shotgun is the best for home defense and the Remington 870 is the standard and reliable 'best of class' in this category. Also quite respected are the Mossberg 500 and Winchester 1200/1300 series (not currently sold but quite common used). You want to make sure that a full sized 12 gauge shotgun is one you can handle. If it is too long of a stock (if you have shorter arms) or too powerful (it does have a kick) then consider a 20 gauge and perhaps a Youth model (Youth models will have a shorter stock). DO NOT GET A .410 SHOTGUN! This is too small and inneffective on bad guys. Congradulations on your decision to not be a victim! Gun ownership carries a lot of responsibility, be sure you know the rules and keep it safe and secure from small hands. Also, you must be sure of your resolve to take a human life that is a threat to you and your loved ones. If there is doubt about your will to kill, resolve this doubt before arming yourself. Good Luck!

Whether you get a 12, a 20, or 16 gauge shotgun, the most important thing is to make sure the stock fits you.

Go to a good gunsmith and have him cut the stock to fit you and install a good recoil pad.

A shotgun that doesn't fit you will hurt you worse with recoil, and make it harder to hit your targets.

I bought a 20 gauge Stevens M-311 for my wife, but since the stock didn't fit her, she preferred my 12 gauge Fox.

I've owned and used Mossberg M-500 shotguns for over 30 years and want no other pump shotgun.

Both Remington and Mossberg make a nice pump 12 gauge; you can get one with interchangable chokes so one shotgun can be used for a number of purposes. I own a number of both of them, but person pref is the Remington 870. Recoil on them is minimal; if you want to you can purchase some reduced low recoil shells to get broken in on it. Then go to the full size puppies. There are a quadzillion makers of 12 gauge shells so you can generally purchase them fairly inexpensively. Go forth and have some fun; and good luck.

The best, most versatile and economical pump by far is the Remington 870. I own 3 of them, 2 12 guage and a 20 gauge youth model. If you keep them clean they will last forever. There is an "Express", which is just kind of a plain model, or the "Wingmaster", which has the nicer varnished wood and shiny metal. I have used mine for every kind of bird hunting as well as Trap, Skeet, and Sporting Clays and it work great for each. You can also buy rifled barrels, which can be switched in less than a minute, for slug hunting.

i personally like the mossberg 500 combo in 20 guage.they are light, easy to use and pretty cheap.i got mine for $250 at ***** sporting goods.20 guage is a good middle ground between power and recoil.it suites the bill for clays, hunting, and home defense.
however if you plan to spend more time shooting clays then you might consider a 20 or 28 guage over/under. Beretta make some really nice guns if money is not an object but if it is stoeger arms is cheap and works well. 28 guage is really great for nice for a medium to small framed woman.

Look into getting a used 20 gauge Mossberg pump shotgun*. Save money $$$$$$$ and just as good as a new one*. Well balanced and very smooth action, quality shotgun but inexpensive*...20 gauge*...
