WOW!! thats allot of answers and not allot of facts. to tell you the truth get a tv thats best suitedfor your situation. it depends on screen size, if you want the ability to mount it on the wall. initial cost, and how much ambient light or possible glare you have in the room that the tv is going into. every one here seems to choose lcd or plasma (theres allot of plasma haters out there) , i personally prefer plasma tvs. they myths of imige burn in and short life span and leaking gas are all just myths . none of these have any credibiility to todays tvs.plasma and lcd both have the same life span . andy yes if you leave a static image on a plama for extended period of time( like hours and hours) it will sometimes leave a ghost image . but many many test have seen these images completely disapear in less than a day with normal usage.so there are no permanent burn in. and 90% of the time there isnt even any ghosting of images. and studys have shown that while lcds can be brighter (that comes from the bright lights behind the screen) plasmas have deeper black levels and over all produce more consitant natural color reproduction. they show better more deeper natural color. than lcds. and image remains consistant where ever you are seated to theside of the screen. but plasmas have a screen that is very glossy and can show allot of glare, compare to lcds. so the choice should be based on your particular situation. if you want the best quality picture and dont have allot of glare in your room id pick plasma. if you have a very bright room with allot of glare maybe youwant a lcd. dont listen to all these people who dont really know what they are talking about or dont have and experience to back up there opinions. i have been selling tvs for many years and have incredible amout of information in this field. oh and good luck.. and you didnt mention rearprojection tvs like lcd rearprojection tvs and dlp tvs. they can give you big screen size at a lower price. theyare very bright and dont have glare. but dont have wide viewing angles and perodically have to change lamp that costs about 300$ to do. i could have gone forever but idont want to make it too long. sorry you have to read all these amateurs first. good luck,

Plasma TV's are a bit cheaper than LCD, but if you can make it to a showroom with decent lighting, you'll notice that fast motion (football, soccer, running etc.) isn't as clear on a plasma screen. Plasma's tend to distort motion (at least to my eyes) and I also noticed 'digital artifacts' on the plasma screen more so than on an LCD.
Go with the LCD. I bought a 40" Samsung LCD and absolutely love it! ...so does my girlfriend.
edit: Oh yeah, also look for a TV with HDTV. More cable companies are starting to beef up their HDTV channel offering. The only problem is that if you DO get a channel not encoded in HDTV, the picture will be squished due to the decreased resolution.

LCD is more reliable with a longer screen life, Plasma has more danger of getting the screen burn in by a non changing image if left unattended for more than 15 minutes and also has the possibility of getting damaged due to gas leakage. Between the two Plasma has the better image, but in my opinion I would go with a LCD tv.....

Well, these days it really depends a lot on what you want.
For example, do you want HUD? if so, then you'll probably want plasma or LCD. Then, with those choices, you'll have to decide if you want the low-light, fast action performance of a plasma or if you have a high ambient light environment and you can deal with the slight flicker (due to the LCD response time), then LCD is better.
In general, LCD display consume less power than plasma or their CRT counterparts. So if saving energy is part of your goal, pick LCD.
I have a 52" Sharp LCD which is full 1080i HD and fast response time of 4mS.

Before buying a tv, be honest with yourself and ask what kind of programs do I watch.
Will my viewing pleasure be increased if the screen were xx inches bigger.
Start at a model for example £200. Look at the next grade up if it's an extra £100. Am I seeing an improvement that can justify spending the extra £100 ? and can I reasonably afford it ? am I just getting functions that I'll never use ?
If your answer is yes it is worth it to you then look at the next upgrade and do the same thing again.
It sounds crazy but when you answer the question yourself (ignore the sales patter and cut straight to the chase) is it worth the extra money when model x suited all my needs then you won't end up with an over priced over sized monstrosity.
I have worked in retail for many years. If the customer has the intelligence to ask the right questions the best salesmen can get caught off guard. They probably want to sell you the model that pays them best, not what's right for you.
The golden rules IS IT WORTH THE MONEY ?
WILL IT DO THE JOB I WANT IT FOR ?
When it comes to negotiating the price, and you have decided which one you want haggle. Demand some kind of discount you've decided which product now you want to decide which shop !

it depends on your budget- I would make sure you get a wide screen- high definition tv (1080i or 720). Depending on the size you want and the space you have- you could get some really good deals. LCDs are generally better however if you could get a plasma 1080i tv for the same price- go for it. Before you buy try searching in cnet for reviews.

If you are an 'events' viewer for tv, movies, sports, gaming, etc. then you should think about a front projector with a good projection screen.
Take a look at the Mitsubishi HC3000U projector for around $1000 with a 92" Tribal Projector Screen. Nothing beats inviting all of your friends over to watch a movie on a true big screen. Check it out.

LCD is far sharper than Plasma. The picture , on an LCD TV is much clearer and brighter. Plasma tends to be slightly blurry and colours are not so crisp. Hope that helps!

There are advantages and disadvantages with all types of TVs... ultimately, the best choice is to go to a store and check them out for yourself (some will obviously have better color, etc.). Then, once you have a few choices (that you can afford), write down the model numbers, look up reviews on-line (like googling "review tv panasonic TH-50PHD9UK").

I would buy an LCD. Plasmas look a little nicer, but they cost much much more. Also they wont last as long as an LCD. LCD are a good value, being high quality as well as affordable.
