What sin that humans can commit warrants infinite torture in hell? Doesn't it seem a little overzealously cruel of the Christian god?

I don't get it. I probably have enough on my rap sheet to warrant two months probation and a dozen hours of community service, but not enough for even a minute of torture. What is up with that?

Well, one thing is for sure, I wouldn't want to spend an eternity with a monster like that if it did exist.

None. That is a pagan idea that Christendom adopted. It first was adopted by the Catholic religion and then it spread. The loving God of the Bible would never do that. (1st John 4:8)

Read any encyclopedia to find out where the idea of a burning hell came from. That idea was around long before Jesus came.

But notice what the Bible actually says:

When a person dies they feel nothing. (Ecclesiastes 9:5,10)

When a person dies they are ACQUITTED of their sin.
(Romans 6:7)

All those in hell will be resurrected to everlasting life. (Revelation 20:13,14)

When Jonah was in the belly of the fish it was called hell in the Bible. Was that a fiery place. Of course not. But it would have become his grave.(Jonah 2:2)
When Jacob was upset about hearing of his God fearing sons' death he wanted to go to hell. Why would he say that? Because he was so sad he wanted to die. He wasn't saying he wanted to be burned forever.(Genesis 42:38)

A good Lexicon dictionary will tell you the word means deep pit. Hell is mankind's grave. Don't believe all the lies.

The idea of an "eternally burning Hell" does not come from Scripture. That idea comes from pagan Greece and Rome, who passed it down to the Catholic Church, who passed it down to Protestantism.
The Bible tells us that Hell does not currently exist, but will exist 1,000 years after Christ returns. Those who are unsaved will be resurrected at that time to judgment. They will have a chance to see every bad thing they ever did, and every opportunity to be saved that they rejected. Then they will bow and confess that Jesus is Lord and that His judgments are just. Satan will try to get them to attack the Holy City, but then hellfire will rain down from above and totally consume them...they will not be tortured forever, but instantly incinerated, never to exist again.
Some people like to point to a verse in the Bible that speaks of an "everlasting" or "unquenchable fire" that refers to the unsaved. But this same phrase is used to describe the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah. Are S&G still burning today? Of course not. When something is unquenchable, it means it cannot be put out. However, it will burn out on its own. Likewise, the term "everlasting" here means that the destruction is permanent. S&G never rose again, and never will. Their destruction was everlasting. So will it be with the unsaved.
Our God is a loving God and His punishment of the wicked is his "strange act", but it must be done if he is also a JUST God. It would be like putting a vicious dog to sleep. He doesn't want to do it, but He knows He has to. His justice demands it.

None. That is exactly why it is not true. People take a couple of texts out of Revelation which seem to teach this doctrine along with the parable of the rich man and Lazarus and ignore the rest of the bible. That is not how we are to come to an understanding of the truth. It must be scripture upon scripture, text upon text, precept upon precept. Studying the bible using these guidelines will lead you to only one conclusion. The wages of sin is death, non-existence and only the righteous will receive immortality.

If you choose to follow person a, all of your life, would it not stand to reason that you would want to continue to follow person a, through eternity? If you dislike church, preaching, praise music, and worshiping God, in life, you certainly would not want to do so in the life to come. By the same token, if you enjoy the things of this world so much as to reject the one who created you, would it not be fair to say you want to follow that one the lead you away from God for all time?

The doctrine of an eternally burning hellfire as punishment for sin is non-biblical and completely at odds with the concept of a loving Creator.

God told Adam the penalty for sin: non-existence. He said "from dust you are and to dust you will return." When we die we decompose back into the ground. We are no longer conscious of anything at all.

Death is the punishment for sin, not eternal torture.

It's not easy to sin. You have to KNOW it's a sin. You have to Believe it's a sin and you have to Consciously choose the sin instead of God. God knows your heart. I really wouldn't worry about sin.

Yes. But it was designed to be that way. Humans were trying to think of the worst possible pain. It is meant to frighten people into behaving and following religion.

Though He paid for your sins, Jesus did not eliminate your agency or personal responsibility; He will not make you clean against your will.

The only sin that would put you in Hell is not accepting Jesus Christ as your Saviour! All the other sins God will forgive! God loves you, and He wants you to love Him too! Isn't that amazing that God loves all of us on Earth!!??? US?!?!? He created us! I mean, He has everything, why would He want ME? It isn't cruel. He gave us the choice! He gave us the choice to love Him and obey His commands, or to scorn, mock , disobey, ignore, and reject the One who died for us on the cross. I have chossen to follow and love Him! And i pray that you will choose that 2!
