Hello. I'm a muslim (always been Muslim) and I find God to be caring and benevolent. God is closer to me than anyone else; He is the eternal friend that always supports me. Only He is worthy of my worship. I think God is only unattainable and/or distant if one is not focused in prayer. I think anyone can be God's friend if they just believe and take their beliefs seriously. I believe everything happens for a reason and that we're all here to fullfill some purpose; we only die after fullfilling that purpose, and will die at the right time because God is the fairest judge and true believers will never be wronged. God can always be fully trusted. Very nice question; I'm really looking forward to what others have to say, too.

If I answered from the perspective of my former religion, then I would be validating the pov that you seem to be seeking, which is "God is good." That would be no answer at all.
So, I'll answer with my atheistic views, and let the thumbs-downing commence.
If I were to believe that God exists, then I would see him as a bipolar, vengeful entity prone to childish fits of rage. That's how the Bible portrays him, and that is my honest point of view.

God is like a father-figure, highly involved in my daily life, loving and nurturing, but capable of punishing if necessary. He is everywhere (near and distant).
I am a Christian. I have studied/practiced Buddhism and Gnosticism and spent about 10 years as a non-believer.

I am a Wiccan. To me, the God and the Goddess are the soul of Nature which gives life to the universe -- all things are infused with Their energy and Their presence, which is why the universe as a whole is generally considered sacred by people of my faith. The God/dess is in every breath we take and every beat of our hearts; separation from Them is impossible. They are the gracious Mother and Father of all living things, and Their love is poured forth upon the earth; worship of Them is not required in order to partake of Their bounty and Their blessings, which is one reason why most Wiccans feel no need to convert others to our religion.
The exact nature of the God/dess is one that embraces all dualities -- life and death, pleasure and pain, creation and destruction. Therefore, what God/dess is like to the individual worshipper depends on what aspect of God/dess they have chosen to approach and honor. If they choose to approach the Morrigan, for example, the Goddess will be vengeful, violent, and stern; if they choose to approach Aphrodite, She will be playful, sensual, and loving; if they choose to approach Isis, She will be majestic, regal, and Mistress of all the healing arts. Individual worshippers can develop close relationships with particular Goddesses and Gods, or choose to worship Them as the God and the Goddess, ultimate aspects from Whom all others spring.
Hope that answers your question.

If you must know, it was an Atheist, that had prayer removed from schools. That's why there is so much violence in schools today. God does exist, and one day you will find that out, and it probably won't be pretty. I will pray for all the atheist out there.

The God I serve and love is not vengegul. He is attainable. In fact, His Bible says, "Come unto me."
He is not distant because the Bible also says "I am your ever present help in time of trouble."
Moses was a friend with God. Since His Word teaches me that He is no respector of persons, I believe we can be friends with Him as well. But...it don't "JUST" happen. We have to start to worship and praise God. To get to know someone you spend time with them, correct? How can we be God's friend if we never talk with Him or spend time with Him?

The Islamic view of God is that He is Most Merciful. We should never despair of His mercy no matter how great our sins, and should always keep a good opinion of God. He has 99 names, representing His attributes, including:
The Gracious
The Merciful
The Sovereign
The Holy
The Source of Peace
The Guardian of Faith
The Protector
The Mighty
The Compeller
The Majestic
The Creator
...and so on.
According to one authentic hadeeth (saying of Prophet Muhammad), God says,
"I am as My servant thinks I am. I am with him when he makes mention of Me. If he makes mention of Me to himself, I make mention of him to Myself; and if he makes mention of Me in an assembly, I make mention of hiim in an assembly better than it. And if he draws near to Me a hand's span, I draw near to him an arm's length; and if he draws near to Me an arm's length, I draw near to him a fathom's legnth. And if he comes to Me walking, I go to him at speed."
