Taoism is a philosophy, not a religion. So, yes it would be a good replacement, although I don't understand why the assumption is that there needs to be something to fill that gaping whole. I think Taoist philosophy is interesting and enriching, but I'm not sure I like the idea of some universal ideology. That would be kind of boring, not to mention dangerous. We need dissent. That's what lets us improve and persevere and evolve. And, on a practical level, how would this be possible with forcing it down people's throats.
I like thinking of things myself. And if that means coming to same conclusions that Taoism makes then so be it. At least they'll be mine. Philosophy is better than religion to a certain extent as it has the cool ideas and leaves out the rituals and zealotry, but in the end, it may lead to religion. Then, it would no longer be a philosophy, instead becoming the new religion of the world. Lao Tze's teachings about water, for instance, would probably lead to a water god.
I'd rather we all thought for ourselves for once instead of subscibing to latest issue of Religion Weekly.

No. Its a nice religion and says nice things, but no. People should be free to decide the religion they follow. I think the Buddha and Lao Tzu believe that. Also, i dont want to be forced into believe something because everyone else does it. I like being agnostic/atheist. It lets me be versatile. I can choose to be catholic or muslim, but i wont have any biase from those stand points. Im not too heavily entrenched in atheism as that crazy british evolutionalist atheist guy. He interprets religion too literally. Religion should be interpreted however we choose, but not many people know that. Also, if we have a single "world religion", that would be smuffing out the worlds diversity, and replacing everyone with a clone of one another. If we all took biology, we all know that diversity is a good thing. If you believe in intelligent design, then it can be proven that god ment it to be. Taoism is a wise religion, but wisdom is not easily communicated. Its best to discover on you own. Follows of a religion cant reach enlightenment but the religions founder did. We all have individual paths to take.

No - taoism is very peaceful like buddhism, but yet none of them would fit as a world religion. No religion should be applied to the world. It would take away too much freedom from the individual person. Nothing should ever gain that much power.

How about absolute freedom to do as you wish as long as you don't violate the rights of another? Screw all these mind control cults that attempt to control people's minds and actions and dictate morality.

I don't think world religion needs to be replaced, I think it needs to be eradicated. Taoism would definitely be an improvement though.
