DZE, will it matter what we say? We didn't evolve into dentists.

There are two possible reasons why the wisdom teeth have become vestigial. The first is that the human jaw has become smaller than its ancestors' and the wisdom teeth are trying to grow into a jaw that is much too small. The second reason may have to do with dental hygiene. A few thousand years ago, it might be common for an 18 year old man to have lost several, probably most, of his teeth, and the incoming wisdom teeth would prove useful. Now that humans brush their teeth twice a day, it's possible to keep one's teeth for a lifetime. The drawback is that the wisdom teeth still want to come in, and when they do, they usually need to be extracted to prevent any serious pain.

Hey me too! Personally I asked this question as well. They don't actually "have" to be removed but for many, many people it saves a lot of worse things later in life. If the teeth are impacted, there is a great chance they will grow into nerves of other teeth causing much more pain they we've been experiencing in the last little while. (By the way today is the tenth day after and the pain is pretty much gone!) I think they are a great example of Evolutionary theory. Along with many other parts of the human body, wisdom teeth are evidence of a vestigial organ, that is a body part that serves no real purpose anymore.

Jerry Bergman had an article in Technical Journal 12(3): 297-304, 1998. He points out that the change to a soft western diet was a major factor in the problem.

But the fact is, many people do NOT have to lose their wisdom teeth. My dentist and orthodontist both told me to have them removed or they would cause lots of problems. I decided to keep the money I would have paid them, and let the wisdom teeth grow in. And guess what, they work great and didn't crowd my teeth a bit (that was many years ago); I'm happy to have four extra teeth for chewing.

The evolution inspired tendency to routinely remove wisdom teeth, even when they often produce no problems (like the
appendix and tonsils), is silly.

Or better yet - the human shoulder. What a horrid design!

Use an ice pack and take the drugs. I kept ice on mine constantly and it wasn't too bad.

For dze - evolution of wisdom teeth:
It is quite likely that our ancestors had larger jaws, especially since they had to eat more food raw than we do today. Since the large jaw has not been necessary (and is less useful than, say a more attractive small jaw or more skull room for a larger brain), our jaws have diminished in size over time. Now the wisdom tooth no longer fits. More people, however, are being born without them.

Creation science and the Bible tell us that before the Flood, everything was giant, including people, animals and vegetation. This was due to a 7th layer of ice or water above the atmosphere, which increased air pressure on the planet and filtered out the harmful rays of the sun. This in turn caused a 30% increase in the oxygen content of the planet, and everything grew to enormous sizes. Even the Bible says "There were giants in the Earth in those days", and the fossil record is consistent of showing us examples of giant pre-Flood animals, such as 8ft. long beavers, 2ft. long grasshoppers, giant mammals and dinosaurs. There are also fossil records of giant humans that lived before the Flood.
What does this have to do with wisdom teeth, you might ask? When humans were giant, they had plenty of space on the jawline for all their teeth. After the Flood, the atmospheric conditions changed, and people and animals could no longer grow to the sizes they once were. Humans still had the genes for the same number of teeth, but now humans were growing much shorter and smaller in proportion to their pre-Flood ancestors. The extra molar was now getting crowded out of the jawline, which is why it causes so much pain and trouble for modern humans. So you can blame your wisdom tooth pain on Adam's sin, which ultimately caused the Flood and the changes in humans.

Taken from the television show "Discovery Channel" on Man's evolution... long ago mans head and mouth were big and as time passed the head got smaller and wizdom teeth most often grew in crooked because the head is now smaller than it was before but with the same number of teeth to fit in a smaller place...... OPPS I'm sorry, what i mean to say is that is god's will.

In Hell all your teeth will be impacted Wisdom teeth, and you will have cancer, diabetes, and Lice. Oh wait that'd be just like earth.

Hogie your arguement is simply ridiculous. There are plenty of Cultures on earth that drink milk straight from the beast. There are LOTS of cultures that dont drink milk AT ALL and never have. I was breast fed and raised on milk from our own cow .And i have very crowded teeth (english teeth). Besides he isnt blaming God he is pointing out yet another reason to disregard the belief in a Godlike Creator not blaming God.

Ouch! Hope you get to feeling better soon.

The Vatican’s chief astronomer said, that “intelligent design” isn’t science and doesn’t belong in science classrooms, the latest high-ranking Roman Catholic official to enter the evolution debate in the United States.

The Rev. George Coyne, the Jesuit director of the Vatican Observatory, said placing intelligent design theory alongside that of evolution in school programs was “wrong” and was akin to mixing apples with oranges.

Wisdom teeth are useless, if that is the best ID can do then it's truly pathetic as the majority of people get theirs pulled because of impaction. I've had all of mine since age 12 and one pulled so I can empathize. I found that Motrin worked wonders for the pain. Hope you feel better.

I always figured it was because many years ago before dentist most people lost their teeth. So when the wisdom teeth came in there was room and they had something to chew with...We haven't always had dentist....Now we have healthy teeth and no room for the wisdom teeth.
BUT
I do hope you get to feeling better. Nothing worse then a toothache
