"Chemical imbalance" is a catch-all description of mental disorders. This term is used so often because it helps people understand that the dysfunction of the sufferer is not the person's own fault. There could be any combination of triggers.

Virtually anything can be reduced to a "chemical imbalance," theoretically speaking. Depression, Bipolar, ADHD, Anxiety, Psychosis... He may have a mental disorder of some kind, which can be treated with medications, therapy or both.

There are countless signs that may indicate mental disorder, but the most important sign is that their dysfunctional symptoms affect their daily functioning, whether academic, social or occupational.

Usually signs of a chemical imbalance include those that are related to mania or depression.

Signs of mania include:
Talking fast
Not needing sleep
Driving fast
No concentration
Spending money
Having lots of sex

Signs of depression include:
Tiredness
Crying
Suicidal thoughts
Eating too much or too little
Lying around all day
Hating yourself

I don't think your friend has a chemical imbalance.

That's a 'short question' with what could be a 'very long answer'..!
The "signs" of a "Chemical Imbalance" are many and varied! As are the "triggers"!
A person who gets "real angry" very easily(violent or not) could be that way for any number of reasons.
Maybe it would be a good idea for your friend to talk to a Doctor. It could be that he/she has a serious 'mental health' issue...or maybe is just 'stressed' by something that can be resolved very easily. It could also be as simple as needing to 'adjust' his/her diet, thus, quickly solving the problem. All of these things COULD 'signal' a "Chemical Imbalance", but without 'professional help' it's hard to say.
Have you ever talked to your friend about your concerns?
Maybe you could let him/her see this!?
You're obviously a "good friend" -which is just what someone with 'problems'(which is clear he/she has) needs!
I hope all works out well!

P.S. -look for 'chemical imbalance' on the internet(or 'mental health'), there is definately no shortage of information on the subject!
(Maybe if you find something particularily "fitting", you could email the 'page' to your friend, or 'share' the address ..?)
