Apply or go to the station and ask them. See if they will send you to the academy. If not, you will need to attend one on your own.

Your local police department will have a recruiting division or personnel division that takes the applications and conducts screaning tests of applicants. You will need to file an interest card with them for the position/positions that you are interested in. They will contact you on when the civil service exam is to be taken as well as any physical exam, fitness exam and/or psychological exam. They will conduct a deep background check on your criminal, credit and driving records and verify your education, age etc.. If you are determined to be an acceptable applicant, you will be assigned to an academy class where you will undergo criminal code education, crime scene education, small arms training, basic first aid training, report writing, criminal procedures etc. Once you pass your academy training, you'll hit the streets as a rookie, usually assigned to a training officer for several months before you are turned loose on your own. As far as additional formal education, go for a BS or MS in Criminal Justice or Forensic Science. Like any industry, the more education you have, the more valuable you are to your department and the more likely you are to be promoted. Don't be afraid to apply to different agencies if you have a desire and passion for law enforcement. Check with the county sheriff, the jail, the prison systems, the Immigration and Customs Enforcement and any other agency that will take an application from you. Generally the FBI, US Marshal, Secret Service, and other federal law enforcement agencies require a Bachelors degree to apply, but research each on line and find out who you meet the criteria for and apply. Thank you for wanting to serve your community!

Some departments require a college degree in criminal justice, as well as training at the police academy, or a military background. Also, they check you for any drug and alcohol habits, and any police record for which you haven't been pardoned will not be acceptable. Finally, I think they would also ask for a driver's license, I think maybe "Class 2" or "Class 3"

These are just some of the major things you need. Good luck.

You need a high school diploma to meet the minimum qualifications. However, do be seriously considered you need a solid education/training background. Get atleast your associates degree or your bachelors degree. Once you graduate, you need to attend an academy to get your hands on training.
Trust me, you dont just walk in, apply and get an interview. Its alot more complex than that. They have to make sure you are competent mentally, physically, psychologically and socially.
Good luck.
