If by gossip, you mean telling other people's secrets, or telling lies about other people, then potentially very damaging indeed. It indicates a mean-spiritedness, and a willingness to violate the Golden Rule. After all, I'm willing to bet you don't like other people to gossip about you.
If you are in the habit, break it. If you have a friend who keeps feeding you gossip, the next time she starts in, interrupt her and explain that you think it is wrong to spread stories about other people, whether they are true or not. If they are lies, that's terrible all by itself, and could even get you sued for slander. If they are the truth, they are probably things the person is attempting to keep private (otherwise it would not generally be called gossip), and you do not like to invade other people's privacy. If she takes offense, just tell her that you're sorry she is taking this personally, because you know it's probably a bad habit she picked up from others, and has not thought about how damaging it can be.
