Professional Hairstylist here to the rescue! There are a lot of different creams you can use to get a curl. I only recommend gel to my clients if they want that 1983 wet Jerry curl look. It's the millennium, the Rick James look was so 20 yrs ago. OK, lets get started. First I suggest you purchase a cream product made buy Bed Head called " Small Talk" . It's in a purple round bottle with a neon green pump. It will help your curls appear to be naturally wavy, rather than stiff and dull. Second, you need to use some heat and product on straight hair if you want those beautiful locks to curl. Purchase a diffuser if you don't already have one. Don't have one? A diffuser is a device that you attach to the end of your blow dryer. It creates more heat in certain areas and defuses heat in others. This creates a curl in the hair. Make sure to bring your blow dryer with you when purchasing a diffuser, you want to make sure that it fits. Third. OK, so we've got the product, and the heat, now lets dry this damsel in distress. Before drying, towel try your hair. DO NOT comb your hair after a shower! Simply bend your head over and scrunch your hair in a towel to get most the moisture out. Now, apply product, bend your head over and place the blow dryer with attached diffuser directly underneath your hair. Place your hair in the diffuser and put your dryer on a low speed. Rotate with scrunching your hair and diffusing your hair. You need to be constantly scrunching if you really want these curls to work. 4th, once you're all dry flip your head back to it's up right position, catch your balance, wait till all the all the stars are gone and the blood is back in your head. Apply a light Hairspray and bam! you've got the fabulous, glamorous, Kerri Russel (Felicity) before she chopped her hair off curls! Hope this helps and good luck!

I scrunch my hair all the time when I am in a hurry. My routine is wash with a curl boosting shampoo, do not use conditioner as it weighs down your hair. However do use a spray leave in conditioner. Also use a mouse or just a spritz hairspray that will leave your hair manageable. You don't want that wet look all day. Then just flip you head over and use a diffuser on your roots only. If you blow dry all of your hair it will get frizzy. Just scrunch and let it air dry. This gives me that very earthy not too curly look that is popular now!

I have staight layerd hair too. And when I want to scrunch it I just spray it with hair spray a little and then as I dry it I hold it in my hand and bunch it up, kinda make a fist. Open enuf for the air to still get into it. I didnt realize how curly my hair was after wearing it straight for so long. What ever hair product you do use only use a little amount. It will weigh it down and not make it curly. I use hair spray or mousse

I've used Bed Head products. My favorite was Hair Glue (Got2Be Glued, in a yellow tube), but Sun Silk also has some good creams. My hair was straight and in layers, but if I used these products, I could scrunch my hair. I don't think there's a way to do it without some sort of styling product. I liked the Got2Be Glued because it held up even if my hair got slightly damp in the rain. And my hair is very stubborn, that's why I used such a "heavy" product. It's the only way I could do anything to my hair besides have it lie flat.

I recommend towel drying your hair, putting about a quarter-sized amount of whichever styling product you want into your hair and tousling your hair with your fingertips. Stand up and use your fingertips to "piece" or separate your hair into a shaggy looking 'do.

Don't comb it after the shower. Mouse is strong but not as stiff as gel. There are also tons of hair products that help you to style your hair wavy that you can just put on your wet hair. (ie pomades and styling gels). It's important to scrunch while drying. The best thing you can probably get is a hair dryer with a diffuser...it softens the air flow and the plastic fingers help to create waves. If not...after using product, I let my hair air dry either coiled in buns secured with bobby pins around my head or in loose braids. hope that helps!

Products - Texture cream by L'Anza (texture cream)

Hair dryer - Flip your hair over and blow dry your roots in the direction the root goes...but don't completely dry it.

Round Brush - Use a round brush to get some body out of your hair.

Scrunch - Use your hand and scrunch your hair while blowing it dry the rest of the way. always blow your hair dry in the direction the hair is going not against it.

Hairspray - Bed Head hairspray is wonderful not to sticky just a light hold.

Sometimes shampoo & conditioner can play a big factor. It can also depend on if you have thin or thick hair.

Well I found that if i take a nightly shower when i want my hair to be scrunchy i put it up into a messy bun and go to bed like that and when i wake up sometimes its still wet but i use just a lil gel and scrunch it some more. its turns out lookin good that way.
good luck

A good mousse will do the trick, i recommend Dove Volumizing Body and Lift Mousse. Its light, reduces any frizz, and its pretty cheap. Or if you like Garnier Fructise, their mousse products work well, too.
When you are styling your hair, Flip it over (while its slightly wet) and scrunch your hair with a handful of mousse. Flip your head back over and take a blow dryer with a diffuser on it and dry your hair on high with the diffuser. When dry or mostly dry, spray with hairspray and VIOLA!

no matter what you do you will need a hair product. if you want the natural soft moveable hold...try this. tigi (bead head) curls rock amplifier. its a cream in a pump. try one or two pumps while the hair is wet, and blowdry, on low while scrunching the hair. it leaves a soft moveable hold. if you want the wet look scrunch, then try the scrunch gel by tigi. its great also. i am a tigi fanatic. their products are awesome. i am a hair stylist and hardly ever use any other product. feel free to email me with any questions

Start out with it wet, and then finger-scrunch it while you're blowdrying it. If you're opposed to gel in particular, other products such as mousse and pomade can help hold the scrunching in place so it lasts.
