The general rule with tattoos is the more fat at the site of the tattoo, the less it will hurt. In other words, the more boney the area, the more it will hurt. I have one on my hip, and another on my shoulder. The hip was no big deal, and while the shoulder was not excessively painful, I was very ready to be done, as it was a lot more painful than the hip.
Outlining to me felt like an exacto knife is cutting into you (to me), and is worse than color. The reason is that usually the black is applied with three needles in a row, while color is nine needles in a square; this means that with more needles, the sensation is spread out over a larger surface area, which makes it hurt less.
Beware, though.....I don't know if you're having color done or not, but usually they will continue to use the outlining needles to fill in if the tattoo is to be all black.

I just received a tattoo on my back last night. It's in the middle of my back right around my spine. It goes from my neck down to my bra line so it's a pretty big tattoo! The first outline of the tattoo hurt like hell, especially when he was near my spine. By the time he got around to the second outline my skin had already numbed up so I handled that very well. I originally preferred getting a tat on my arm and now I wish I would have after the pain I experienced last night lol. If you do decide to get a tat on your back, make sure it isn't a big one because that's a lot of pain that you have to take in for a long period of time!

I have heard that getting a tattoo on areas that are right on the bone hurt more than areas where there is more skin. I got one one my right thigh and it didn't really hurt at all. A friend of mine got one earlier this year on her lower back and she said it hurt pretty bad. I also hear that filling in hurts more than outlining. I just saw this guy get a tattoo on the front side on each of his hands where he had some filling in done and his hands were bleeding a little bit.

Pain is relative. I have a high pain tolerance so getting a tat was a walk in the park for me. Your level of pain may not be my level of pain. Be mindful where you get it, tattooing on thin skin like your elbows, top of your feet, or sensitive skin such as face, stomach, breasts, or genitals is going to hurt more than a fleshy surface like your outer arm. Start with a small design so if you find it to be unbearable you don't have to have multiple sessions or long hours and you end up with something you like.

I've never had a tattoo on my arm, so can't help you there. But, it doesn't hurt too much on your back. I was told by several people before I got mine (on my shoulder blade) that it would hurt so bad and I'd have to stop and all this b.s. The filling did hurt just as much as the outline, anyone who says it goes numb is full of it.

It hurts at first but you get used to the pain and it just feels irritating like someone constantly pinching you, but it's not as bad as some pusses think it is. Just remember, the less skin fat the more it will hurt like the back of your hand or on an elbow

i have a tattoo on the top of each foot and it hurt like a *****. my first was a tribal with butterflies on my lower back and it didn't hurt anywhere near what my feet did. the only part that hurt the most was when it got out ot the edges(away from my spine)..other than that no worries. i think outlining is the most painful part. goodluck.. ink is addicting.
