I have a large scar on my upper arm, it never used to bother me because nobody could see it under my t-shirt but I'd like to start wearing vests and tank tops at the gym for comfort and also to show off my newly aquired "guns", the scar makes me too self concious so I'd like to have it covered with a tattoo if possible, also if it is possible would the scar still be visible underneath the tattoo?

Hi there, Yes it is possible to tattoo over scars as I have recently had a very similar thing done myself as I have a 8 inch scar across my collar bone where I had to have a steel plate implanted after a motor bike crash I have another on my left fore arm where my arm went through a window many years before.

The best thing to do is ask a local tattooist (make sure they are creditable though or you will end up with a mess that you can not do anything with) and see what they think.

The most important thing that you have to remember is that the scar must be at least 12 months old but the older the better as this means that the tissue has had time to re-condition. Also if the scar is less than 12 months old you run the risk of the tissue splitting when tattooed (I know this sounds mad but I have seen it happen and it's not nice) and higher risks of an infection when the tattoo heals as the freshly tattooed skin must be treated like an open wound.

I have never had any problems with either of my big scars that have been covered up with tattoo's to the point that you don't see them at all.

Hope this helps and good luck with your tattoo.

Yes you can, although I think it depends how deep the scarring is. I had my tattoo done over a scar to make the scar less noticeable. The only thing I would say is that the healing process took a bit longer over the scarred area and it was a wee bit more painful getting that bit tattooed, but not bad. You should go along to your nearest reputable tattoo artist and ask their advice. Good Luck!

it definitely depends on the quality of the scar. also it depends on how long it has been healed. the longer the better. some scars are easily tattooed over and some... not so much. also your choice of artist will have great bearing on how well a tattoo like that will turn out. i saw an excellent example of a covered up scar today here is a link:

If you were to get a tattoo over the scar, it would only change the color of it, not the texture. If your scar sticks out from your arm or if it is indented into your arm, it will still remain that way. I wouldn't attempt it though if I were you.

tbh i dont think you can tattoo over a scar as the skin is probably more sensitive compared to normal skin and also i dont think the ink would go onto the scar properly.if you have a tat and the skin stretches ie pregnancy etc the tat stretches and looks all out of shape so i would have thought its pretty much the same .

That kinda sounds like a good idea, like if the scar wasn't too big or anything.
Though I would think it would probably hurt more to get it over a scar, or it might even get infected.
But you should really ask your tattoo artist first.
Good luck! =]

yes it is i went in to a tattooist and asked this question:) he said the scar needs to be healed completely otherwise it wont cover it. i had a cross done and it covers it nicely. but be warned it did hurt loads when he did tattooed the scar tissue!!!

The tattoo would conceal the scar if done right. I know, because mine do. In fact, a tattoo is a colorful scar. So think of it as giving the boring scar a makeover. Lol.

no most tattoo artist wont do a tattoo on a scar because it can damage that part of the skin

You could be tattooing over more sensitive skin and more likely to get an infection. A scar would actually look better. Good luck
