I kinda grinned once and got to do some push-ups. I had a drill sargent named DRILL Sargent Sargent. He was the most evil person I've ever met. When he asked my Tradoc commanders name he wasn't amused when I told him it was General Motors. Some people have no sense of humor.

Fyrecrowe, I too, had a drill sgt. named sargent (back in the 1950's), either at Ft. Chaffee, or Ft Jackson. To crack a smile, ANYTIME, in those days would get you a special invitation to the latrine, the mess hall's grease trap, or the motor pools wash rack!!!!
There was one section 8 case, who would do anything to get out !!!( remember, back in the 1950's there were a lot of draftee's) and I often remember him whenever I watch MASH (Klinger) on t.v.
NO !!!! Whether in the army, marines, navy, air force, coast guard, or a reserve unit on the weekends, the sane, prudent, intelligent, does not laugh at the n.c.o., drill sargent!!

Then he will call you inner maximum Pyle, belittle you each 2nd, slap you around, make the full team get indignant and beat you with socks crammed with bars of cleansing soap. then you definately'll circulate insane and take a seat in on a rest room with youre rifle and stay ammo yelling, "it is MY RIFLE....there are various LIKE THIS....." then while the drill sargent is attainable in, you shoot him and shoot your self in the top.

One of my mates did and he spent the rest of the day running around the square with his rifle above his head. This was in 1955 and so discipline was a bit stronger than today and more was expected of us. Remember, all the early stages of training are there for a purpose, to build responses and to create a unit out of a disparate bunch of undisciplined softies. If done properly, it engenders pride, respect and saves lives.

It is hard not to laugh at some of the stuff in boot camp. But unless you love to do push-ups, it is best to stifle the laugh.

No, never. We had a drill Sergeant with the nickname of "El Diablo" He scared the shi* out of us everyday. I shutter to think of what might have happened if we laughed at him.

Drill instructors, while being evil/mean sob's, are some of the wittiest people ever. their insults are sometime too funny for them. whenever one of mine threw out a particularly cruel insult that they would start to laugh at they would take their campain cover and pull it real low to hide it. towards the end of boot camp you dont even care about getting thrashed and my drill instructors would ask for volunteers for the quarterdeck. so on one of the last days i allowed myself to smile at something ssgt. wiseman had said. he laid into me and sent me to the quarterdeck, but half my squad was bored so they came with me and we all enjoyed one last good thrashing by the guy we at first hated, but by the end of bootcamp was our favorite.

No, I guess I sensed it would arouse further intense attention.
You gotta be nuts to be doing that and I suspect they would remove you from the program.

I know of someone who did, in the Navy a long time ago.
200 push-ups later, he wasn't laughing anymore.
