It's one of those strange things - there's always a sign at the start of a bus lane which tells you the hours of operation, and all you have to do is READ IT & OBEY IT ! ! !

different bus lanes vary depending on what area its in. Some bus lanes are 24/7 but others work from 8.30 am to 9.30pm. Before a bus lane, there is a small blue sign which tells you what times it works from

Read the signs posted on the bus lanes. In Houston, you're allowed to drive in the lane to turn at the next corner.

The times vary as it depends on how busy the road is at certain times of the day.
The Highway Code details all the information regarding use of bus lanes and is available from stationer's and good bookstores.
Or you can just read the information written on the blue rectangular signs that are situated at the start of every bus lane.

If the bus lane is operational 24-hours, it is an offence to drive or park in it at any time.

If the bus lane has 'hours of operation' displayed on the signs (e.g. 8:00am-9:30am and 4:00pm-5:30pm) you may drive or park it outside those hours.

Many people are ignorant of this fact, because they are poor drivers and don't read road signs correctly.

See Rule 120 from the Highway code, and note the phrase "during its period of operation". That is the law, not the guesswork...

Thank you, Wilfred - you have clearly proven my point about ignorance.

Bus Lanes are ONLY for BUSES and for Emergency Services 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

If the police spot any other type of vehicle in a Bus Lane they will stop, caution and fine the driver - I have been told this by Bus Driver Friends AND I have seen this myself.
