I have worked my K-9 for the past eight years. The only reason I was able to "procure" a K-9 was because of the lack of "human" manpower and the K-9 option was less expensive. It took my department five years to accommodate my request.

Most "handlers" are selected from the pool of officers that ask to be assigned K-9 duties without too long of a waiting period. One must be able to care and train with the K-9 on and off duty. Showing a bit of initiative and responsibility always gets the right eyes on you as a prospective handler.

Best wishes.

Every department will set their own rules. You need to be specific to get specific answers.
