Unfounded? Neither of the two items mentioned in your questions even come close to being "unfounded." Evolution being a scientific fact, for one. And your age of the Earth objection is kind of silly. Sure, God could've just created an empty, dark planet and let it sit there for a few billion years. Sure, the people calculating a 6-10 thousand year old Earth could have missed quite a lot. But regardless, there are quite a few stupid people out there that believe in something as ridiculous as a 6 thousand year old Earth. Where we were walking around with dinosaurs and all that cool stuff. Evolution is not assumed as the "starting principle of life origin." The "origin of life" is relegated to the abiogenesis section. Evolution ONLY deals with life. So life must have already existed for evolution to even come into play. I don't have a great deal of knowledge in geology, so I won't comment too much on your "subduction goes agaisnt common sense" idea . . . but from my limited understanding your objection sounds ridiculous. Or you don't actually know what you're talking about. In either case, I suggest the science section. And there are plenty of things in the Bible that have been shown to be wrong.

I'm not really sure why only atheists can answer this question, but...
Radiometric dating: measures the proportions of various radioactive isotopes. There are about twenty different types of radiometric dating.
Dendrochronology: counting tree rings
Obsidian hydration dating: measures the penetration of water into obsidian crystals
Stratigraphy: counting sediment layers
Thermoluminescence dating: measures the amount of light that an object releases when heated. This tells the last time that the object was exposed to light.
Optical dating: determines the last time that the object was exposed to sunlight
Paleomagnetism: measures the age of rocks by comparing with shifts in Earth's magnetic polarity
Tephrochronology: measures the composition of volcanic ash to determine age
Oxygen isotope chronostratigraphy: measures age of oxygen-bearing materials by comparing oxygen isotopes to various cold or warm geological periods
Ice core dating: counting layers of ice sheets in annual freezing cycles
Speleothemetry: measures size and composition of stalagmites and stalagtites

There are two major methods,
Stratigraphy and radiometric dating.
In stratigraphy, layers are dated by geological characteristics that are either local (e.g. volcanic ash layers) or global (e.g. meteor strikes; sorry, no floods).
Volcanic processes produce datable minerals. These minerals can be scattered into more recent valley layers as mountains erode, but no layer can be older than the rocks in it. Many areas contain multiple volcanic eruptions than create an excellent timeline.
Many areas were former seabeds. The layers can be characterized in a variety of ways. The predominant life of different eras has been confirmed in numerous areas where the life is sandwiched between eruptions of volcanic seamounts.
A variety of radiometric techniques can be used on the mineral inclusions of rocks.

The various techniques work on materials of different ages.
Direct dating of fossils is rare and the fossilization process involves the exchange of minerals with the environment.

The age of the rock in years can be found by measuring the rate at which a parent element decays and then measuring the ratio of parent element to daughter element in the rock. The ages in years of the different geological time periods are found by measuring the absolute ages of many rocks from all of the different periods. (Hadean, Archaean, Proterozoic, Paleozic, Mesozoic, Cenozoic) These periods are measured in MILLIONS -4600 being hadean.

Simple, they measure the amount of carbon-14 in the rock or fossil.

Why are you asking atheists?
There are many different dating methods, none of which support the nutty "Christian" fundie idea that the Earth is only 6,000 years old - if that's what you were getting at!

They ask nicely. If female, they ask the rock or fossil's brother for that info.
