On two different discs, so I don't think it's the disc, rather than the player, it has gotten just so far and stopped. I turn off the power, turn it back on, and select the option for scene selection. But when I find the place I think it left off and select it, it just whirrs the disc but does not start playing. What's going on?

There is a slide that the laser assembly rides on when it's playing your DVD. It is possible that a dust ball or some object may be obstructing the laser from moving past that certain spot on the DVD.

Unplug the DVD player, open the cover and see if there is an obstruction.

Hope this helps!
