The Army has a veterinary corp - my mom was the first woman commitioned in it years ago. She did a lot with reseach of bomb sniffing dogs. I know that she worked out at Walter Reed and she did some time at Ft. Sam Houston (sp?) They used to also do meat inspection - don't know if they still do but I would think that they do. They are also on base for military animals and family pets. So the Army is where you would want to go to be a Vet tech, start by working with a local vet by getting your feet wet so that you are familiar with things when you go in. When my mom did research she ended up having to put a lot of dogs down because of the type of disease that she was dealing with, but other wise the job of a vet tech is the same as in the civilian world. You would be working a lot with patrol dogs/guard dogs/attack dogs and there are certain things that you do and don't do when working with them - a vast knowledge of animal behavior is a must!

It would primarily the Army. I believe all services use them to varying degrees with the military dogs. For the Marines I do not know if they recruit them or if they are provided by the Navy as other medical personnel are. The best thing to do is check with each of the services recruiters and then make a decision on which branch of service best suits you. Remember to check on the availability of the MOS/rating; sometimes the smaller fields are full and the opportunity to enter them is limited because of it.

The Army does all of the vet work. A vet in the military's main duty is to take care of military dogs. And horses if they are used (usually just ceremonial). There is a normal vet office on many bases, but again, first served are military working dogs. Then the military families can have their pets treated. Usually the vets are swamped with family pets, so they are very busy. But overall, they are normal vets.

The Navy used dolphins and presumably dolphin trainers in Iraq. It's probably a very small field. Maybe Special Opps might use goats or camels to navigate tough terrain. Other branches might use dogs in a limited capacity, as the other person said. I don't think the rest of the armed services use animals, being that they have been mechanized since WWI.

only the Army, and their primary purpose is to take care of the military working dogs of all Branches as well as Food Inspection.
