Hi,
The reason that they do that is because at 1 the pre-race show starts but it says NASCAR racing. And at 2 is when they usually start the trackside activities (national anthem, invocation and the command) and then another 10 or so minutes after that for the cars to get ready to start the race. They did show practice on ESPN on Saturday. So that's why NASCAR starts the actual race an hour later than the airing time.
Ryan9 - hope I could be of good help

1pm EST is the start of the pre-race show, not the race itself. The networks do have imput on the start times, but NASCAR is the one who sets them. If you look at ESPN's broadcast schedule, it says NASCAR Countdown (the pre-race show) is at 1pm, and the race is on at 2pm. Just check ESPNs broadcast schedule on-line or look at your TV listings to see what the actual race time is. That way you you'll know the start time for the race and skip the pre-race show if you want.

By the way, the coverage for next weeks race at Michigan also starts at 1pm, but the race starts at 2pm.

You might want to git sum edgiction in spellun ther dundee.

I think they evaluate the best times for their audience and make changes accordingly. At least I would if I ran the show.

Hey ESPN im an unemployed project manager, I can help you with your programming. first I would poll the desired audience.

They just get you to tune in to watch all the commercials, and to hear an update - fines from last week.. i think they will do that the entire time they have the races...

they always say the race starts and hour before the actual green flag. this is the prerace crap. they have to do all their interviews, and they have to show all these video clips and talk about the latest news in nascar.
