Get some experience when you are in college and a local police department or any law enforcement agency. Be a community service officer or something along those lines, this is normally a non-sworn position where you work at the side of the department handling less-important complaints and calls.
After college, put yourself through an academy. You are much much more attractive to the department because then they dont have to sponsor you and pay for your academy (if your state requires an academy, mine does)
Then apply, apply and apply some more. The application process is very tedious but the law of averages will make your chances of getting a job much greater. The more departments you apply at....the better the chances, its pretty simple.
Once you apply and your application is accepted, you will have to complete a written exam, a physical exam, several interviews with lieutenants, the chief and FTO's and possible the fire and police commission. Then a background investigation will be done on you. They will check your references that you put on your application, your criminal record and pretty much just make sure you havent lied on your application.
If you are successful in all these steps, then you will have to take a psychological test and a medical exam. Pending the successful completion of these steps, you will get a job offer.
The process is very long but departments are very careful about who they put on the streets to protect the integrity of their department. In simple terms, they are covering their asses.
Good luck.

Apply to your local PD for a job. In the meantime, go make an appointment with the local Chief and ask him what he would do differently if he was just starting out. Personally, I apply first and then work you way through college while being an Officer. College is great but learning on the street is where you get your real LE education.

Sounds too simple, but head for the local police department. Depending on the size of the department, you can ask to speak to a public affairs person.

You can also access several websites for legal enforcement. The federal government has the FBI, and most if not all federal agencies have legal enforcement departments. States have state troopers, counties have sherriff departments, then towns, cities and localities have 'regular' police.

Many police agencies require a college degree be it an associates or bachelors. However, the better paying positions are normally with the federal law enforcement agencies.

With a degree....you should seek the higher pay!

When applying for a position with any law enforcement agency....one must complete an application!

Best wishes.
