I suggest you modify your question to add information on training for what. If you are just looking for general conditioning and cardiovascular fitness, then running, swimming (as was mentioned), cycling, or even brisk walking is good. However, if you are looking for alternative training methods for running, there really aren't any. If you want to train as a runner, you need to run.

However, that is not to say that cross training would not be beneficial. Some weight training, especially upper body would be good. Not to increase muscle mass, but to increase overall upper body strength (light weights with high number of reps). Some people think that swimming and running do not mix, but I believe that swimming would be a good cross-training exercise, as is cycling.

But the bottom line is that you need to exercise the muscle you will be using and there is no better way of doing that for running than by running.

Good luck.

Biking is a great way to cross train for runners.
There are several main reasons:
1. it gives your tendons and ligaments a break from the pounding, pounding, pounding stresses of running.
2. it still gives you a great cardio workout (which i know i CRAVE...) : )
3. still works your leg muscles, but mainly uses different muscles than running does. this gives your main "running muscles" a break, and helps the ones in your legs which usually don't get worked as much.
4. also, ANY cross training activity is great because it mentally gives you a break from your same old running routine, as well as physically giving your body a rest from your regular routine (basically, it helps prevent mental burn-out and prevents injuries by giving your body "active recovery")
** it is generally advisable to cross train at least once a week, two times is better, if you can manage to fit it in!

...have fun, and stay healthy and happy!!

Cross train with some biking, swimming or roller blading. Consider other sports like soccer or basketball. Throw in some yoga now and then.

definetly swiming. it works out all of your muscels and when you have an injury or dont want to run you should swim or do high knees in the water.
also hills those help alot and work out your legs and thighs they're hard but if you pump your arms and keep them moving it will be good.
