the jeep I-6 4.0 is ther same casting from the late 1980's
to present. the manual trans and the automatic have different bellhousings and the back of the crankshaft may be
different. also the t-case is slightly different. the splines on the
tranny output shaft are also different. if you are switching just the engine then you will need the computer from the donor jeep so they will be in sync with each other. if you need more info please go to www.bulltear.com and go into the forum.
i am one of the moderators there and we have alot of people experienced in this. i use my full name there. you can figure
it out cause my initials are RDM. good luck

Ref mybuttstinks2001 answer..You do not and CANNOT swap bell housings!! Cast into the block!!
Yes, the engine will interchange...HOWEVER see if you have the unit ignition on the 2001 or idividual coils, the 1996 does not, you DO want to use the 2001 intake as it will give more power. You must use the 1996 injectors though as the later ones use 49 PSI versese your 39 psi, and the injector plugs are different. If you have automatic transmission in both no problem, but if one is auto and the other manual, you will have to move the flex plate or flywheel respectively.
Now, the head in the 2001 is MUCH more restrictive in the exhaust ports to light off the converter faster, so there will some..maybe 5 hp loss. Casting no.0331. That is why the intake was changed to regain that power.
Other than above it will work and no problems.
Good Luck

Yes they will interchange. Its the same engine, the transmission might be slightly different and require an adapter. Plus you will have to have the computer in the 96 reprogrammed.
