It's been explained to me here:

That I'm the definition of the word 'ignorant'.

Which, of course, I am. That's a trait I share with the person who made the observation, and with every human being on earth.

The fads we choose to embrace, religions, myths, 'science', patriotism, and our inability to examine our pasts to draw conclusions about the present and our future are our way of illustrating the truth of our ignorance.

Isn't one of the only true statements a human being can make about himself, "I am ignorant?"

I am. And I'm casting no aspersions on you when I assert, you are.

We arrogant humans have that, at least, in common.

Can you deny it?

We are ALL ignorant about something. The more I dig into things, the more ignorance that I reveal to myself. The more I learn, the more questions I have about what I learned.

But the pervasive line of thought for many is to deny ignorance. The people who do so are telling me about them when I encounter them. They are saying that they are ignorant about many things including the fact that they are in denial about being ignorant ; I figure out of pride.

As long as there is that resistance to embracing the truth about ourselves, the more open to error that we become. We remain unteachable.

I haven't looked at any of the answers to your question yet, but I'm willing to go out on a limb and say that there will be those who only take the charge of being ignorant as an offense.

We will see, won't we?

I'm not seeking any help by looking for the answer to this from anywhere but inside myself.

To me, the definition of ignorance is simply 'not knowing' ~ of just not having any AWARENESS of the 'so many things about which someone A: Knows nothing, or B: has a huge hole in their understanding/s of.'

I have chasms in my knowledge that you could fit Mt Everest into, and yet I wonder at those who will happily state their 'ignorance' when saying, 'I don't know nothing' ~ AND wherein they can not make the mental leap in understand that simple double negative.

Maybe to some, that sounds 'superior' of me, but for me, the ''sudden'' and actual REALISATION of my own utterance (some years back), hade me blanch and shiver horrible.

- at 5am in the morning.
- he returned, back.
- he climbed up the stairs.
- at this moment in time.

These are some examples of things I've heard said and or read that make me wince and wonder, about the awareness of those who utter or write them.

Sash.
