What is so good about Patron? Is it really worth the $50 per bottle price?

No. No. If there wasnt songs about it most folks would never even try the crap. The Silver is worse than the gold but neither is worth the price.

Patron Tequila Prices

It is very smooth and less bitter as a 100% agave tequila- there are other 100% agaves that cost less and some cost more the difference as always is in the distillation. Patron was one of the first to be nationally marketed and is a much better tequila than Jose (imo) but there are so many to try it may be best to get the 1oz bottles at a large liquor store (like BevMo or Liquor Barn) and have your own tasting with a friend. To enjoy a tasting have Shot glasses (2-4) a bucket of ice (or a shaker w/ice handy), a pitcher of cold water and some cheese, crackers and fruit (salsa and chips will sway your ability to taste after a while). Place 3-4 tequila mini's in the ice bucket and chill for 30minutes to 1 hour prior to tasting then after your guest(s) arrive set up the glasses and snack and instruct everyone to have a pip of water, swish and swallow between each liquor. Now pour everyone the same amount and taste - look at the color, smell, sip, let rest on tongue, breath and discuss, rise with water and repeat. Always taste a tequila (or any liquor) un mixed the first time so you can fully appreciate (or hate it) for itself and not the mix it is in. Once you have found one you like it will be worth the price!
I have found that Margaritaville is best for mixing at parties (they have their own mix as well which is very well balanced). It is also really nice on its own (a nice lemony taste) it is also very inexpensive. I do have a high end on hand for special occasions but it varies by what region of Mexico my friends visit.
Hope you find a tequila you like! Good Luck!

Patron is good but there are better tequilas, especially for the same price. Herradura, Cielo, Tezon (if you can find it), Cabo Wabo and El Tesoro are all superior to Patron. I am a huge fan of tequila and have sampled upwards of 30 different brands and Patron really is somewhere in the middle. Once you try a 100% blue agave tequila, like a Patron, you won't go back to the crap like the $0.99 cuervo bottom shelf tekillya. There are 3 types of tequila that each brand offers- blanco (unaged, clear, best for mixing), reposado (aged 3-11 months in oak barrels, amber color, can be used to mix or sip) and anejo (aged 1+ yrs in oak barrels, dark amber color, exclusively for sipping like a fine scotch).

My recommendations:
Blanco- Milagro (runs around $30/bottle and is good to mix with)
Reposado- Cabo Wabo ($45) or Cielo ($45)
Anejo- Herradura ($45), Tezon ($55), El Tesoro ($45)

Stay away from El Jimador, Correlajo and for the most part 1800

In my humble opinion only the gold Patron is worth the money.
It's almost as if their silver was developed to fill in a cheaper market segment. The gold is aged in French oak casks and has great flavors. The silver is...not.

Try Herradura silver instead.

If you want another great gold tequila get the El Tesoro de Don Felipe, Muy Añejo. I belive that to be the best tequila you can buy for the money.

Well its a lot better then that cheap stuff you get at the market jose cuervo. but there are other tequila that blow patron away but are you willing to pay up to 300 for a bottle maybe even 600 for some, Patron has a high prices one called grand patron ..ive tried it and it has quality ..best of the patron family, some bars change you like 40 bucks a shot for that one. patron silver maybe 20 bucks a shot at some places depends the area

Patron is good but it is mostly popular due to heavy marketing. The money behind the Patron brand comes from the Paul Mitchell hair care people (and we know they know how to sell overpriced crap! $30 for shampoo identical to Suave at $.99)

Anyway, Patron is everywhere in Mexico now too because the locals know the "stupid gringos" will buy it. In reality, there are hundreds and hundreds of excellent tequilas produced and there is bound to be a better one for you at probably a more reasonable price.

I like good ol Cazadores and Cuervo Tradicional (NOT gold!)

I am not a big drinker however I adore Partons Anejo. It is the only alcohol I enjoy drinking straight. As I don t drink often so a bottle which I usually pay 45 to 50 dollars for lasts for many months and I think it is well worth the money I really enjoy the taste. If you are going to mix I to would buy a less expense brand and choose a mixer that you really enjoy.

Not a fan of tequila, but if I am doing shots with friends, I would definitely pick Patron Silver over the others. It's smooth and doesn't smell like tequila...

If you are drinking it straight, I'd say it's worth the price. Or try Cabo Wabo. If you're making margaritas or something, use Cuervo.
