Your parents can teach you but there are two reasons you should take lessons. The first - insurance reduction. The second - you will be taught by a certified instructer and won't be taught your parents bad driving habits (say what you want, they do have them, almost everyone does)

Your folks can teach you--but a good driving school or a defensive driving course will offer a reduction in insurance costs as an incentive.... drive right and good luck

Take a driving course. This will prevent you from failing a test by believing something your parents say is legal (and may have been years ago, but changed).

You do not need to take a driving school or drivers ed. course, however doing so will reduce your insurance premiums. Premiums that will be astronomical for a new driver like yourself. New driver + teenager + compulsory insurance = $1500.00 - $2000.00 annually. Ouch!
Drivers ed. might get you 10- 15 % off this premium.
