In a fair fight, definitely the Nimitz, but it all depends upon who's side Jack Bauer shows up to fight for. After all, if he can defeat a room full of two dozen terrorists without harm, imagine what he could do withe a carrier!

Kind of a pointless question carriers don't engage in combat, their air wings do the fighting. I would think the pilots on the Nimitz would be in a better position with the weapon load out available and sortie rates, not to mention the carrier carries 3 to 4 time the aircraft of its opponent.
But probably the first shot would be from a submarine in the carrier task force, or a cruiser launching cruise missiles.

Nimitz class carriers have more capable aircraft and more of them than the Kuznetsov. Nimitz would win hands down.

It's kind of a weird question, because it puts them in a vacuum, which never occurs in real life. In real life, you would have a CBG along with the carrier. That's the question.
It was argued before and gamed out many times. You will probably find that we have superior technology over the Russians. The Russians tend to favor cruise missiles for their offensive power on the open seas, whereas we favor submarines and aircraft.
I don't think that there is any doubt that the US would prevail, but it would be a close thing.

Game over the strike package and sensors of the Russians don't even come close to matching up with a Nimitz class.

We would outnumber them about 4 to 1 in the air. My biggest worry was a large mine or an ambush in the Suez Canal.
