It's usually in a small and fancy bottle whenever someone who is rich in a movie pours a glass for someone. It is generally drunk in small amounts.

The small and fancy bottle is a decanter and can have any liquor in it. The brown liquid is not usually alcoholic but could represent many different liquors. If the actors don't specify ("Would you like a scotch?") it could be any number of drinks from sherry to scotch, bourbon to brandy.

It is supposed to be brandy and in movies it is most often tea or caramel water. Movies use decanters (fancy bottles) in order to avoid endorsing any 1 brand of alcohol or advertising the same without pay.

It is difficult to answer with the info you give but I would go for Cognac which is served in small ammounts and it is brownish and normally you have it as an after dinner drink
