Can my husband and I on our tax papers for work count the status as married, 1 for myself and 1 for my spouse for a total of 2 dependants?

Are you talking about your W-4 for how much to have taken out of your paycheck? If so, yes. If you are talking about tax return, then, no, you can't be your own dependents, you get 2 personal expemptions, nothing more.

Your COMBINED withholding allowances should add up to 2. You generally should both claim Married and 1 allowance for yourself only. Alternatively the one with the higher income should claim 2 and the other should claim 0.

Look in your phone book under US Government and look for IRS Taxpayer Assitance Division. These folks will not only answer your questions but file your taxes for FREE!
Just bring in your paperwork,Social Security cards for everybody involved and some ID.

Yes, but less will be withheld from your gross income if you claim 2. Claim zero and in all likelyhood you'll get a refund rather than owing more come next years filing.

Yes, you can, but don't EACH of you claim two allowances, claim two total.

You should come fairly close at tax time - either owe a small amount, or get a small refund.
