A friend of mind asked me because her brother has joined them.
He is a professional man, and is not short of a few pennies, and she is really worried.

It's a cult. Tell her that she should try to get her brother to leave as soon as possible because it's a very dangerous criminal organization masquerading as a "religion".

There are multitudes of people who have suffered tragic experiences during their involvement with Scientology. Read about them here:

http://xenu.net/archive/personal_story/cheryl_s

Here are more "bad experiences" with the cult including an illegal plot to infiltrate the government, brainwashing techniques, mind control camps, attacks on critics, and DEATHS caused by Scientology doctrine and members:

● Operation Snow White – Under this official program, Scientology operatives committed infiltration, wiretapping, & theft of documents in government offices. This program constituted the single largest infiltration of the United States government in history. Among the 11 prominent Scientologists convicted of this conspiracy was Mary Sue Hubbard, the wife of Scientology’s “prophet”.

● Operation Freakout - Their campaign of sabotage & violence against Paulette Cooper, the writer who published her research & findings on several cults, including Scientology. Scientology’s official plan: to frame Paulette, ruin her career & reputation & get her either incarcerated or locked up in psychiatric confinement.
The official plan: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~dst/Krasel/cooper/frk1.html

● Fair Game - the Scientology policy detailing how the organization may confront & handle critics & perceived enemies. Here is a direct quote: "Enemies may be deprived of property or injured by any means by any Scientologist without any discipline of the Scientologist. May be tricked, sued or lied to or destroyed.”

● Physical & psychological punishment: Scientologists who "break the rules" while members of the "Sea Org" must subject themselves to the Rehabilitation Project Force (RPF), which includes regimes of harsh physical punishment, forced self-confessions, social isolation, hard labor and intensive ideological indoctrination.

● Brainwashing & mind control: Scientology exerts control over its members by means of typical cult tactics, including but not limited to controlling information about internal doctrine & criticism of the organization, severely restricting social contact outside the cult (including the practice of “disconnecting” with any family who question the credibility & trustworthiness of the cult), creating an “us against them” mentality by villainizing a specific out-group (for Scientology, it’s psychiatrists), & claiming all those outside the cult are unenlightened.

● Violent Kidnapping - Lisa McPherson was a Scientologist, was involved in a car accident & resultantly became mentally unstable. She was kidnapped from the hospital by agents of Scientology, held against her will, refused proper psychiatric treatment & allowed to STARVE TO DEATH.

Briefly, it was founded in 1953 by L. Ron Hubbard, a science fiction writer (who lied about his military service and educational qualifications). They believe men are immortal beings (Thetans) not from this planet.

Members go through a process of 'auditing' - removing past negative memories (engrams), and this costs hundreds of thousands of dollars. After all 'engrams' have been removed, you can then control Matter, Energy, Space and Time (MEST). They worship some deity called XENU.

The so-called science of Dianetics looks good and reasonable - people get sucked in. Once in, however, you can't get out. The organisation keeps its members firmly in line and an awful lot of rumours abound about death threats and blackmail. I stress these are allegations - so far the organisation seems to be on the right side of the law.

Anyone with more money than sense will be a prime target. Take Tom Cruise, as an example. Personally, I wouldn't touch it with a barge pole and your friend is right to be worried about her brother.

The deepest parts of the scientology beliefs are kept hidden from the public & from its members. They're not disclosed until you have been a scientologist for several years. At least, that's what I've been told. But now the truth has got out, or has it?

This is funny - and may be true:

If hes not short of a few pennies, he soon will be.
I have extensively researched scientology, and basically they take all of your money selling you self improvement courses using high pressure techniques similar to door to door double glazing salesmen.
The self improvement courses are so called because the guy who invented them improves himself financially.

started with the aid of L. Ron Hubbard as 'self help approach' referred to as Dianetics (he began writing SiFi books and then wrote self help books) ...it right into a grew to become "faith".....many human beings (Christians, atheist, agnostics, former individuals, ect) say it relatively is the suited 'text cloth-e book' occasion of a non-violent Cult (concept some individuals have suggested actual and emotional abuse) the consumer-friendly theory is: throughout your and previous lives you have had destructive studies which you won't be in a position to remember, those repressed studies 'carry you back'.... with the aid of specific counseling referred to as "Dianetics" (supplied with the aid of the CoS. for a nominal fee) you may 'technique/cope with' those undesirable studies....as quickly as there all dealt with, you may go beyond to a "intense undeniable of existence" ....the top....
