Studies have shown that bottled water isn't necessarily healthier than most tap water because there aren't any guide lines or controls on what can be bottled. When I'm out and need something to drink I by water and then refill it with our tap water. I use each bottle for a long time before I recycle it. I see no reason to by it by the case.

It takes large amounts of energy to power those machines that form, fill, and package all of those water bottles. Most of that energy is made from burning fossile fuels. You also have to take care of those machines by using toxic lubricants so everything runs smoothly. The trucks that transport the bottle water to the grocery store will burn many gallons of fossile fuels. When you drive to the store to buy your bottled water, you will probably be burning fossile fuels. So you see, by buying bottled water you would be emitting thousands of tons of CO2 and other chemicals each year. Recycling those bottles won't be enough to cancel out the damage that was caused to the environment.

So the real question is, "Do you really want to go through all that trouble just so you can pay to drink water that is more contaminated and expensive than tap water?"

Go here, it will explain everything.

If you're green, yes. You can get better water out of your household tap. So consider it sinful to use a product that must be acquired, processed, bottled, shipped, chilled (maybe), all of these things requiring the unnecessary use of resources (water, plastic feedstock and energy for the bottles, energy to transport the filled bottles, energy to dispose of the empty bottles through recycling or landfill, etc.
And every test so far has shown municipal tap water to be every bit the match of any bottled water available and usually purer than most of them. If you are in a community where water may take on an off flavour occasionally, get a Brita or similar water filter for your drinking water,

The only reason I drink bottled water is for convenience. It is handy to have a bottle with a screw on lid in the car or while walking. Austin water taste very good especially very cold. So, I keep refilling my water bottles with tap water and usually have several in the refrigerator at any given time. Using once and throwing it away is what I find wasteful.

Studies show that bottled water is not as safe as tap water, at least in the US. Also think about the oil needed to transport the bottled water, make the plastic bottles and the amount needed to recycle.
Bottled water averages about $6 a gallon. Tap water is about 2 to 4 CENTS a gallon. So if you have it I would suggest filling the bottles with tap water instead.

I don't see how it would be!
Just as long as those bottles end up in the recycle bin instead of on the side of the road!
You can also save by refilling your bottles, be careful though, bacteria can build up in the water bottles after so much use.

Most bottled water is simply filtered tap water. Do the research, only a few companies out there actually bottle from a spring. Personally, I save money and the environment by drinking tap water. If it's bad in your area, buy a filter.

People have been duped by the whole bottled water craze. What's next bottled air? Actually, yes it is. The resources it takes for you to have your sporty bottle of water is not worth it. Most of the companies have lower standards than municipal tap water. Some of the companies actually use municipal water in their designer bottles! This site has some good info:

Since you're asking... see the answers regarding tap vs. bottled water. If you're on the go, I wouldn't recommend re-using plastic bottles very much, as the plastic begins to break down and leach, as well as the bacteria risk. My advice would be to "Invest Now, Save Later." Buy a Sigg water bottle or something comparable (or even a Nalgene, though they need to be replaced over time, also) and just refill it, over and over and over and over. It seems like a lot at first (around $18 or so for a SIGG bottle), but think of all the money you spend on individual bottles over time, plus the impact on the environment. Works for us!

no. Recycle the bottle, or buy big bottles of water you can refill and refill the small ones too. That way you are not spending extra money on big packages of bottled water.
