Hey there,
Im not going to harass you like these other idiots on this page. I assume you want to update your computer to XP SP2 (service pack 2). Ive been in your exact same situation myself. The only way around this seems to be to try and find a copy of Windows XP SP2 online however the catch is you need a 'genuine' CD key and Windows has compiled a list of fake ones (thats why perhaps it wont let you upgrade to XP SP2).

Once you have another copy of Windows (download from TorrentSpy or whatever download site of your preference), try and find a Student Volume Licsense. If you need more help, feel free to email me.

Maybe that helps!

Try installing Windows Genuine Advantage Notifications, in the link below. Then try and install Service Pack 2.

If this doesn't work, then Microsoft probably thinks you have a pirated copy of Windows. Of course, this may not be the case, as Microsoft identified thousands of legit copies of Windows as "pirated."

Sorry, I've got the same problem. Apparently my computer was part of a company network at some point in its murky past, and now that it's in private hands I can't install service pack 2 either.
Just have to grin and bear it......unless someone knows otherwise.

Hi, if your computer has been part of a company network running on a windows domain it may have local computer policies configured or have been locked down by the it department which stops users from doing this type of thing. When you switch you computer on does it ask to login to a domain? or are you using a local computer profile. Do you have correct person is Manage computer -> users and groups?

If your current version of Windows is not genuine obviously you wont be able to get the updates. How to get Windows genuine - you buy it then have no further worries knowing you'll automatically get all the updates there are.

If you have a pirated copy of Windows you can't get updates. Buy a legal copy, install it and then all will work.
